France Versus The Burkini

Controversy in France over cultural swimwear

Most people already know that France’s beach areas are not really the most modest of environments. And now that refugees and Muslim families have fled to France, they are now realizing just how France’s cultures are towards their beaches. The full-body- covering swimsuit (A.K.A Burkini), allows the Muslim woman to remain completely covered and still be able to enjoy the water.

However, since the Burkini was invented and used on these beaches, the emotions in France are growing more angry and tense by the second. So far every opinion towards women wearing the burkini seems to be split in half, some of the French citizens say that it is a harmless method for the women to remain loyal to their religion and culture, meanwhile others are completely against it and the individuals who choose to go through with it should be fined.

Personally, I am not exactly seeing what the issue is here... most women don’t go to the beach to be gawked at by others. Some go to the beach because it is relaxing and a beautiful was to spend the day! So the whole argument that the women are too overdressed to go swimming isn’t a valid opinion. You don’t like the way that it looks? Alright, DIVERT YOUR EYES. Another individual’s culture should be none of your business and you should respect it. It is unbelievable that this is even considered an issue in the first place.

One of the women who has been stopped by police due to her burkini is named Siam, and as she was enjoying one of Frances beautiful beaches, she was stopped by officers and told to remove her veil otherwise she was going to have to face a fine. She replied that she wasn’t there to upset people; she merely wanted to enjoy the day. So rather than removing her veil, she simply paid the fine and continued her day on the beach. Throughout the rest of her day spent at that beach, she heard racist terms and harassment.

First of all, there is something seriously wrong with the mindset that some of these individuals have. Who raised their son or daughter to think that it is okay to treat others in this manner? Telling another culture to “go home” and that their culture isn’t welcome is so inhumane, disgusting, and disrespectful. I couldn’t imagine living a life where my culture is spat upon. Most women are treated awful for wearing clothing that isn’t modest and is too revealing, but now that women are dressing in a modest and religious way they are being fined and hassled. These police officers and citizens are not only being unbelievably hateful towards these women, but they are also humiliating them in a public place.

Considering how much terrorism has happened due to ISIS in the world in such a small period of time, you would think that individuals would want to pull together and try to defend each other. Rather, they are dividing and becoming more hateful towards others of a different culture. This isn’t going to help defend our countries from the next attack. This isn’t going to help keep peace in the world. And this definitely isn’t going to create allies for future wars and attacks. We need to better accept others and their cultures and stop acting like their culture is just going to discontinue if we don’t like it.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
