FPRA Takes On The Big Apple

8

Florida State University boasts hundreds of diverse clubs to join as a student and, sometimes, it can be overwhelming to choose from such a wide range of groups of people.Maybe you were like me. I didn’t join a sorority my freshman fall semester. I felt like I wasn’t a part of a core group of people and, more importantly, I felt confused about where to begin to find this group. My freshman year, after officially declaring my major as public relations, I decided to join the largest student chapter of Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) at FSU, in order to learn more about my chosen career and grow as a young professional. FPRA is a professional development organization, which holds meetings twice a month and brings in speakers from the area to discuss relevant issues young PR professionals face. These issues range from resume critiques, networking opportunities, how to stay creative in a cover letter, and how to land your dream internship.

Each semester, the organization takes a professional development trip to a city across the United States. Past trips include visits to major agencies in Chicago, Boston, Orlando, New York City and Atlanta. Last month, FPRA members traveled to New York City to network with global agencies, including Ketchum PR, The Brandman Agency, PepperComm, Finn Partners, Sawhorse Media, Lippe Taylor, Hawkins International and Affect PR.  During their visit, these members had an opportunity to meet and talk with key leaders at these agencies.

Pamela Rothenburg, a Delta Delta Delta in the Public Relations program, is the president of FPRA’s student chapter. She understands the importance of these professional trips and loves bringing this networking opportunity to younger students.

“Imagine hearing career advice about how to land internships and jobs directly from the people who matter most. We sit with everyone, from entry-level employees to CEOs, all who have the ability to put our resumes on top of the pile. Visiting companies is exhilarating because you're struck with the reality that these connections can lead you to success,” Pamela says.

Sandy Saintilus, a junior in the public relations program, joined FPRA in NYC and realized the full potential of her dreams. “When I think of FPRA, I think of opportunity. The organization helps you bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to go. It's not about creating the path for you, but rather exposing you to all your options and letting you organically choose your niche,” Sandy says.

Not a public relations major? Still interested in the communications, media, journalism or marketing industry? Have no fear. FPRA is open to all majors, but an interest in the industry is definitely a plus.

Jen Reich, an information, communication and technology major, has gained invaluable experience from FPRA. She is the current Digital Coordinator of the organization, live tweeting meetings with the agencies and posting pictures on Instagram. “My favorite part about being on FPRA’s Executive Council is giving back to FPRA what it has been giving to me,” Jen says.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.
