Anybody that uses make-up products can tell you that the matte-lip has kind of taken over the world, a bit. Now, while this exciting time for make-up artist's and users, we have to keep a few things in the back of our minds. Obviously, the cost of these products, the performance (pigment, lasting-wear, etc.), and ethics (vegan/not vegan, cruelty-free, where it's made), etc. Thanks to my dear friend, Denny, I have COMPLETELY fallen head over heels with the company "ColourPop Cosmetics" (www.colourpop.com). The company is CRUELY-FREE, (almost 100%) VEGAN, and THEIR MATTE LIPSTICKS RETAIL FOR $6! *explodes into a pile of biodegradable glitter*
There are a few catches, however, with CP cosmetics. For instance, they ONLY sell their products ONLINE which means you have to pay at least $5 for shipping in the U.S. This means that you can't go to a store, swatch a color, and see what it looks like with your skin-tone. And because CP products have gained so much attention & traction, you have to wait (at most) two weeks for your product, which kind of stinks. But the product is made and shipped from California, in the SAME place that makes Kylie Jenner Cosmetics (which can retail up to $30).
Mostly, I've had great experiences in terms of ordering CP cosmetics (besides the wait time). But for living in NY the wait time isn't terrible and worth it for such an awesome and inexpensive product.
With all this being said, I've followed CP on almost every social media platform possible, including SnapChat and recently I saw that they were releasing some pretty sweet deals. For $18.00 you could purchase not ONE, not TWO, not THREE, but FIVE mini-liquid lipsticks. And these aren't just any of their liquid matte colors, THESE are the BEST SELLERS! I know this probably doesn't sound like a huge deal, but for someone that is OBSESSED with ColourPop, being able to buy a mini of a shade that I've been dying to try but couldn't order is kind of awesome. Because there was a limited amount in stock (they are unfortunately sold out now) I was able to get my order in 6 days! I decided that I would do my first ever review on the Odyssey about these awesome matte-liquid-lipsticks!
*Please remember that these shades are MINI's. Even thought I ordered the package knowing they were "mini's" I had no idea how small they were!*
Beeper
Beeper is the first color in the mini "palette" *by the way these are REALLY REALLY MINI* and is definitely a nude color. The pigment for beeper, and almost ever colourpop product, is VERY strong. Be careful that you do not make a giant no-no or else you're gonna have that pigment ALL over your lips. Personally, with colors like Beeper, I don't really worry about using lipliner, but for darker pigments it might be a good idea.
Overall, I LOVE this color! I've never owned a true nude lipstick before so to have one so neutral is pretty awesome! Beeper is currently in stock online. Believe it or not, I accidentally wore this color to the gym and it STAYED ON.
Most CP liquid matte lipsticks dry almost instantly, so it has a really nice, light, and long-lasting wear. However, I notice that after a few hours of wear, my inner part of my lips (where they close) lost the pigment. This could easily be explained by the constant moisture from my saliva (ew, but no one can really prevent that).
Clueless
I was actually super surprised with how much I love Clueless. In terms of general lipstick-preference, I'm not a fan of pinks AT ALL. I barely own a piece of pink clothing, let alone pink makeup. But, when I tried this matte-lip I was very pleased!
On my skin tone, it's not a baby-pink. It's more of a sunset pink with a touch of violet. I absolutely adore it! In terms of coverage, it is very similar to beeper.
Tulle
THIS SHADE...let me tell you...this is my favorite in the whole kit. A while back I purchased my VERY FIRST liquid matte from ColourPop called "Avenue". Avenue is a deep burgundy, almost purple, lipstick with a hint of ox-blood red. This shade reminds me SO MUCH of Avenue!
The main difference I find between Tulle and Avenue, is that Tulle is not only a touch lighter but it has a hint of brown in it. While that's probably not too noticeable, it makes Tulle go with *literally* everything. It's a color that you can wear to work, out to dinner, or wherever you want!
[please excuse my poor lighting @ my bathroom]
More Better
I see you More Better, I see you... Much like Tulle I was DEFINITELY surprised with how much I enjoyed using More Better. Like Tulle and Avenue, the pigment is THERE, but it also has a kind of patchy application. I had to apply the wand with the liquid lip twice, but that's not bad at ALL.
It's color (which the picture doesn't do a lot of justice) is so beautiful. It's truly as if Creeper and Avenue had a baby; and then dunked some beautiful purple in it.
[again, my apologies for my bathrooms bad lighting]
Creeper
THIS COLOR. THIS SHADE. THIS LIP. THIS. THIS. UGH. *explodes into a pile of biodegradable plastic*
I misjudged you Creeper...I Susan Boyle'd you &, of course, was happily surprised. I am a collector of red lipstick and THIS blew the entire collection out of the water. First of all, I only needed ONE COAT. ONE. ONE APPLICATION. BOOM. DONE. That is practically unheard of with reds! It was dried in seconds, and the crusty feel that I had with More Better & Clueless was nonexistent. This is definitely the best performance in terms of coverage, pigment, and application in the kit, by far!
Honest Thoughts
I adore CP products, as I'm sure you can tell. And as great as it is that the formula of their liquid matte lipsticks is so fast-drying, it definitely dries out your lips. Particularly, with Clueless, my lips were CRACKED. Now, I had also eaten my breakfast and lunch without reapplying BUT for a long-last wear, you're probably going to get some cracks.
As I mentioned above, performance, cost, and ethics are major in reviewing this kind of product. I rated the entire kit overall on a scale of 1-10:
Performance: 8/10
-Pigment: 5/5
-Long Wear: 3/5
Cost: 8/10 (Shipping is at least $5, if you're shipping to the U.S.)
Ethics: 9/10 ("Tulle" unfortunately is not vegan)
