The 4th of July is a stressful time for our fur children. It's not just the sound of fireworks that makes them upset; other festivities such as large groups of people and the mass of activities may freak your pets out.
Here are a few easy ways to keep their stress levels down.
1. Keep them indoors
It's best to leave them out of the festivities for their own safety. They can't take off if they're inside. And if you're staying home, comfort them to make sure they stay calm.
2. If you have to bring them outside, keep them near you
If you can't leave your dog at home, bring a leash and make sure they stay on it.
3. Don't let them escape
If your dog is a known escape artist, make sure there's no way for them to get out. If your dog feels unsafe, he or she may want to run to a safer place. Don't let this happen.
4. Don't give them table scraps
Pork, onions, chocolate, and alcohol are dangerous for dogs to consume. Don't even give them small amounts. It's best to avoid giving them anything, no matter how cute they look.
5. Give them medications if they have some
If your dog takes anxiety meds, give it to them. If not, don't sweat it, just keep them feeling as safe as possible.
6. Keep them away from any type of fireworks
Even the smallest of sparklers can give them severe burns. Rule of thumb: if it's unsafe for a kid, it's unsafe for a dog.
Here's to a happy and safe day for everyone!
