The 14 Stages of Writer's Block

Writer's block: a problem that has plagued every college student since the beginning of time.

We have all been there: the dreaded writer's block. It might be the paper that you put off until the night before it is due or the article you need to write but have no clue what to write about. It never fails-- writer's block always strikes at the worst possible time.

Stage One

Realize that you have a deadline that is much closer than you feel comfortable with. Try not to let the dread set in while you continue to procrastinate by watching Netflix.

Stage Two

Finally stop watching Netflix, clear off your desk, make a pot of coffee and start to get to work.

Stage Three

Write three sentences and then take a well deserved break. Look how productive you were! Reward yourself with another episode of "Gilmore Girls" on Netflix.

Stage Four

Realize that you need to be more productive than you are actually being right now. Type up another paragraph. Reread what you've written, delete it all and start back over because what you just wrote was a load of crap.

Stage Five

Cry.

Stage Six

Check Facebook. Write a status about how bad your writer's block is. Realize that you are still procrastinating and go back to your writing.

Stage Seven

Write a few more sentences. Check the Facebook notification that just popped up of your friend commenting "omg same" on the status you posted. Get sucked in to the vortex that is Facebook for the next three hours.

Stage Eight

Take a break for food. You can't be productive when you're hungry. Use that as an excuse to spend more time away from your writing.

Stage Nine

Realize that your deadline is now nine hours closer and you have only an hour of work to show for it. Let the dread set in.

Stage Ten

Have a surge of productive activity and write three more pages. Reread what you've written so far. Accept that it is still a load of crap that you are going to turn in.

Stage Eleven

Go back to watching Netflix. Keep rewarding yourself for how productive you've been.

Stage Twelve

Realize that your deadline is now right on top of you and try to finish what you are writing.

Stage Thirteen

Google "ways to be rich without a college degree" and seriously consider just dropping out now.

Stage Fourteen

Return to your writing and write whatever comes to mind first. Give up all hope of getting a good grade. Promise yourself that you will not procrastinate on your next paper. Repeat.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
