Tips on how to properly care for your skin

The Four Step Face Regimen

Everyone wants a great complexion, but how many people actually take the necessary steps to obtain clear skin? Not too many. The easiest way to get the skin you desire is to follow the four step regimen, which includes:

Cleanse

Every morning, before starting the day one should wash away all the impurities that have collected in the pores while asleep. Allowing pores to stay dirty throughout the day will cause oily skin, breakouts and black heads. Splashing water and pat drying is not the correct way to properly cleanse the face. Rinse the face with lukewarm water, lather desired face wash evenly across face, scrub for 30 seconds and finally rinse thoroughly. Body soap should not be used to wash the face; only use soap made specifically for face to avoid over drying. Washing your face incorrectly can cause inflammation, dryness, or extremely oily skin.

Exfoliate

This is the secret to smooth and even skin-tone! Exfoliating isn’t necessary every single time the face gets washed throughout the day, but definitely once as part of your daily skincare regimen. Exfoliating the skin removes the top layer of dead skin cells that make the skin dull. Daily exfoliation allows the skin to take in moisture far better than ever before because of the absence of the surface layer of skin cells. However, regularly exfoliating the skin encourages the treatment of a variety of skin problems such as fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, blemishes and other skin troubles. Apply the exfoliate of your choice to fingertips and gently scrub it into the face. When exfoliating, be sure not to scrub too hard, doing so will leave the skin sore and possibly red.

Tone

Toner is like the miracle worker, honestly! The purpose of a toner is to lift away any dirt or oil left behind after cleansing your face. It leaves your skin feeling refreshed and super clean. When applying toner only squeeze a small amount onto a cotton ball then smooth over the entire face in a circular motion to get the best results.

Moisturize

Despite how oily your skin type is, anyone can benefit from a good moisturizer. The importance of a moisturizer is to lock in moisture and avoid dryness, making the skin soft and supple. All skin types vary; most skin types require more moisture than others. People with dry skin should use a moisturizer that is rich and creamy, while people with oily skin should use a moisturizer that is significantly lighter. Always avoid products that contain perfumes or petroleum, these enable the ability to avoid skin reactions and clog pores. Try to find products that are oil free and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores). Apply moisturizer as you usually would, evenly around the entire face.

These steps are the only way to give you clear and healthy skin. Though it may seem like a lot for a daily routine, in actuality it isn’t. Those who struggle with acne should ask a dermatologist before using certain products.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
