4 Reason Why "New Year, New Me" Is Nonsense

It is time to leave that cliche phrase back in 2016

4 Reason Why "New Year, New Me" Is Nonsense

The date January 1st 2017 marked another incoming year on the calendar. Which also means there are a total of 365 days where people can use the cliche phrase "A New Year a New Me" to justify their changing actions as well as to make new life choices during this upcoming year . However, will the new year of 2017 make yourself or someone else you know a whole new person? I highly doubt that it will because a new year does not equate to a complete change of a person. So here are four reason scenarios I chose to prove that a person who is trying to achieve goals in 2017 will probably still have a similar mentality for them in 2017 as they did back in the year of 2016.

1. Motivation for going to the gym

Each year there are people who will use the "new year new me" mentality phrase to build up their motivation of going to the gym during the new year. There is nothing wrong with wanting to incorporate daily fitness into one's daily routine to feel healthier. But logically speaking, there are 11 other months on the calendar besides the month of January to start the process of becoming motivated about physical health. In addition, a person may have more motivation to change their fitness levels later on in the year. This is especially if their schedule flexibility changes throughout the year. If anything a person should begin working out when it' is most convenient for them to do so. This is better to do than to just wait for a new year to begin to achieve the fitness goals one may want to accomplish during the year. Overall people who begin working out right away in January tend to lose their motivation to work out when February and the other upcoming months come around.

2. Vowing to change a nervous habit

Perhaps a person has a nervous habit that drives themselves or the others around them crazy. Maybe this person chews their nails or maybe they cannot stand to make eye contact with others when they are having casual conversations. Either way, no matter what nervous habit one wants to change in the new year it should be known that abruptly changing a habit will tend to cause a person to relapse back into the same routine. Therefore, wanting to change a habit completely just for the new year starting is not a great idea. Instead, it is more productive to change a habit little by little and to set small goals to overcome the negative habit throughout the year. Basically, habits do not have a set schedule so it is best to create an individual timeline to accomplish the goal of improving any nervous habits one may want to change during the new year.

3. Rekindling relationships

Perhaps 2016 was not a year of positive relationships for some people. Maybe a person broke up with a significant other, or maybe a person has some family or friend drama going on. Anyway, a new year should not just be the only reason why a person wants to rekindle those rocky relationships. Rather a person should evaluate what caused these relationships to become rocky. Then if a person genuinely wants to rekindle these relationships they should make sure that these relationships still have the potential to be salvaged into something positive again. However, if these relationships ended on completely bad terms and the relationship is totaled beyond recognition, it is just best to close the metaphorical door of 2016 on them. Then use the experiences gained as lessons to move on. Then a person can start creating new connections and continue to build upon the already existing relationships they have with others in 2017.

4. Learning a new hobby

It is cool that people may want to pick up a new hobby at the beginning of a new year but they should not just choose to do a hobby because it is a new year. In addition, it is not good to jump into the first hobby one thinks of doing in 2017. I am all for having fun with trying out new hobbies but to just jump into doing a hobby only because it's a new year is not a compelling reason. There are more realistic reasons to learn a new hobby. Reasons such as finding new qualities about yourself or wanting to socialize with others are a few great reasons to learn a new hobby during 2017. Therefore it is a good idea to begin a new hobby whenever the person feels like they genuinely want to try out a new hobby. That way a person does not feel like they are being forced into doing a hobby just because it is the new year. Rather a person should simply learn a new hobby because they want to learn more about as well as have a fun activity to do to pass their free time by. That is a better mentality to have versus learning a new hobby because of the "new year new me" mentality. Plus if a person researches potential new hobbies beforehand it is more likely that they will enjoy the hobby they chose for the rest of the year and beyond.

Overall, these four reason scenarios show how cliche the phrase "A New year a new me" can be. Therefore forget about that nonsense phrase by leaving it back in 2016 and just do these things as well as others when you are ready to do them in life. There is only going to be one year of 2017, but you will have 365 days on the calendar to choose what you want to accomplish or when you desire to start any life changes.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
