So it’s summertime, and you find yourself home from college (and most likely a little short on cash.) And your parents aren’t so thrilled about the idea of you lounging around all summer and gallivanting with your friends, so a job it is. Or maybe two. It may have come to the point where you realize you are so broke that it’d probably be in your best interest if you picked up another gig or maybe two. You’ve now found yourself with a couple of jobs and a goal to buy that dream car or a new laptop or even to have some extra spending money. So here are four realities that you may find in your own life if you are working more than one summer jobs this summer.
1. Exhaustion
From one job the next, or maybe an hour or so in between, there doesn’t seem to be much time for a break or a power nap between each clock out and clock in. And by the time your day is done, the only thing you can think about is when your head will finally hit your pillow. Whether you love your jobs or hate them both and can’t wait to get out of there, by the end of the night you find yourself spent and ready for bed.
2. Money
As much as working multiple jobs might take a toll on your sleep schedule, you can’t complain on pay day. You find yourself racking in double of what some of your friends might be making, and when you’re actually not working you have the chance to splurge a little. And as much as you might like to spend that paycheck the minute it hits your pocket, it may work to your advantage that you don’t have time to because you have to head to your other job, causing some incidental saving.
3. Hanging out with friends
Making all this money is great and everything until your friends try to make plans with you. Trying to make time to catch a movie, or go out to lunch, or even just hang out all of a sudden has become a hardship while trying to intertwine your work schedules with theirs. In addition to accounting for a couple hours of sleep, the occasional family barbeque, and some free time to yourself, you might find yourself going a week or two without seeing your besties.
4. Experience
One undeniable factor about working multiple jobs over the summer is that you are gaining great experience. Whether it be something related to your field of study or not, you’re gaining real life work experience from two different perspectives, and even possibly two totally different fields. It may be customer service and filing papers, or child care and retail, regardless you’ll have twice the experience to add to your resumé as you begin to climb the work world ladder. You may even make a connection that could lead you to your future employer.
