The Four Outfit Esssentials

Color, Pattern, Texture, Shine

The perfect outfit includes four key things – Color, Pattern, Texture, and Shine. If you have ever seen the show “What Not to Wear”, you have most likely heard Clinton and Stacy saying this to all of the contestants on the show (and as we all know, they know best). No matter what the season, these four elements are essential for transforming a good outfit into a perfect outfit. And because the fall season is now in full swing, the perfect FALL outfit will include all of these things as well.

1. Color

Fall can be the season for drastic colors. There are possibilities for great color combinations. This includes burgundy and navy, cranberry and mustard, as well as cranberry and gray. Shades of black, brown, and gray are always a go-to, or mix it up and pop color with a deep red or keep it simple with a bit of beige. Don’t be afraid of mixing these fall colors! Basically, the goal with color is just to add a “pop” to the outfit.

2. Pattern

In one word: Essential. This is the thing that adds the “fun” factor to the outfit. This can be difficult for those who lean towards solids in all of their outfits, however this is why it’s a must. My favorite pattern piece in my closet are my leopard print flats. Mixed with any of the solid colors above, they add that little extra essential element that every outfit must have. If you’re feeling bold with the pattern element, printed pants are also a very cute way to incorporate that into the outfit. Scarves and purses can also be a pattern element. Basically, pattern, even with a small amount, can keep your outfit from looking boring and add that little bit of “fun” that we all need in an outfit.

3. Texture

This can possibly be the most difficult, but definitely is the most lenient. A lot of times for casual, every day outfits, denim can be a go-to texture. However, to get richer texture, lace, tweed, suede, or corduroy (if you’re feeling bold) are all fall essential textures that will look great in outfits! Handbags and shoes can also be used to incorporate texture in an outfit.

4. Shine

The go-to “shine” for many can be your favorite bold necklace or bold earrings – but not both. Too much shine can take away from an outfit. For myself, I wear the same necklace and earrings every day – a simple Tiffany small pendant necklace and small diamond studs. Neither of these are too overwhelming, so my real “shine” piece is my watch. If you enjoy wearing statement necklaces, you can find those in every color imaginable (if you do not believe me, go to Charming Charlie – I promise you). But don’t forget, shine doesn’t end with just jewelry. This element can stem to a metallic clutch purse or even in a cute pair of flats or heels. Just remember to sprinkle a little bit of shine into every outfit!

Happy Fall!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
