One thing most (if not all) college students love is food! All it takes is for somebody to say that there is free food somewhere and you are stuck in a long line with other college students wanting to get free food.

It is also important to note that food is a necessity in life and can be a struggle to have as a college students. This makes eating healthier foods difficult. Sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference in what and how we choose to eat food.

Here are a few tips I recommend trying for at least one week while you are in school:

1. Make half of your grains whole wheat.

You may know what your grains consist of. This includes rice, bread, pasta, oatmeal and popcorn. Make at least 40 to 50 percent of your grains whole wheat. It is healthy and also good for you. For long-term use (if you like whole wheat products), you should strive to make 60 to 100 percent of your grains whole wheat.

2. Try frozen vegetables

Vegetables is the most important food group and we should always include vegetables in our meals. They are low in fat and calories plus they provide us with important nutrients. Frozen vegetables are important because they are convenient and easy to cook. Next time you get groceries, stop in the frozen vegetable aisle and get either some frozen green beans or spinach.

3. Try healthier options when it comes to Fast Food

Yes! Fast food is bad for you and you should not eat it. Yes! Fast food is high in saturated fat and different chemicals to make it taste good. BUT, LIFE HAPPENS! It is possible to cook everyday, 24-7 but it is not always likely. When you are eating fast food, try different healthier (or not as bad) options on the menu.

If you are ordering pizza, add more veggies to it and ask for it to be made on whole wheat crust.

When you want a hamburger, ask for whole wheat bread and try that fish or veggie sandwich that you would never order. Try sweet potato fries instead of regular french fries.

When you go to Starbucks or another coffee shop, ask for skim (fat free) milk and decaff.

These are some things to keep in mind when you decide to go out and spend money on food.

4. Drink lots and lots of water

It is critical to stay hydrated and drink enough water for the day. Your body needs water and being thirsty is not a wonderful feeling. Also, try avoiding energy drinks, sodas and other carbonated drinks. If you occasionally do decide to drink a soda, make sure to drink a lot of water when you are done.

By doing these small things when it comes to eating, you will be able to have and maintain a healthy lifestyle and see minor and major changes that mean the most to you.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
