Four Fantastic Firehouse Facts

Not that I have to prove myself or anything, but I would like to start this article by stating that I have proudly been a part of the Firehouse Family for nearly two years. So, buckle up and for the love of God, please round up to the nearest dollar.

1.) What is "round-up" and why do we have it?

Firehouse Subs (FHS) cashiers should be asking if you would like to "round-up" your change to the nearest dollar. What I have noticed in the past is that sometimes we forget to tell you what the proceeds go to. The First Responder Foundation receives all change that is rounded up from FHS (this is on top of the 0.13 percent of your purchase that is donated to the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation). These donations help purchase the life saving equipment that is used by first responders such as firefighters and EMS.

2.) Why don't we "do it like subway"?

At FHS we toast our bread and steam our meat. For some odd reason this seems to cause an existential crisis for someone who expects us to toast the nest in the bread. The bread selection at FHS also seems to cause issues - sorry, we do not have flat bread... no we can't leave your bread attached to the other half. FHS was founded by firemen for firemen, so the subs have been crafted to the wants of the founders. This is why we don't "do it like subway".

3.) No, we can't accept your tips.

FHS is considered to be a fast-casual restaurant. This means that you order at a register and your food is brought out to you by a server. Because the employees of FHS have a starting pay of minimum wage we are not able to accept tips. Instead of tipping, we encourage you to place your change in the donation collection container or round up to the nearest whole number.

4.) What really bothers us... even though we can't admit it.

*this is in list form... there will be no explanation... don't be that person*

- can you do it like subway

- messy eaters... you don't treat you home like this do you?

- trying to create a sub that is made a Jimmy John's or Subway

- not rounding up... we get in trouble for this

- stealing chips... we know you didn't get a combo

- fully involved (mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mustard) but can I get it without lettuce, tomato, and onion... just say mayo and mustard only

- eating half of your sub the coming up and asking for a refund after it is gone

- when you spill something at least try to clean it a little

- coming in two minutes before we close

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
