Why You Shouldn't Expect Things To Happen

You need to make them happen.

Why You Shouldn't Expect Things To Happen

I know we all have those days where we get stuck in a funk, and feel like nothing is going our way. We feel vulnerable to the world around us and we feel like nothing will ever change. Or we have a good day, then all of a sudden begin to dwell on something that happened in the past and ruin our good day.

My advice to all of you is to stop dwelling on the past, stop thinking about all of the bad things in the present, and begin to look forward. The past is something that's already happened, and there is nothing we can do about it. Dwelling in the present isn't beneficial for you and it's not going to lead you anywhere.

For the present time, think about things you can do to ensure a better life for yourself, the people around, or even the world in general. Do things that will make the future brighter.

We spend so much time in the present thinking about things we wished didn't happen, or wish we had done differently, and it's the most unproductive thing in the world. Instead of taking those mistakes and being sad they happened, take them in and figure out what you need to do to make sure things turn out differently next time.

The past happened and unfortunately we can't change that, but I am a firm believer that all of our experiences, even our bad ones shape us into who we are as people. The person you were then is not who you are now, and the person you are now is not necessarily who you are going to be in the future.

The world is a constantly changing place, and humanity is a constantly changing along with it. We are all going to grow and age but if we are constantly stuck in the past and all the mistakes we've made our bodies will grow but our minds won't. Think about your parents, for example, I highly doubt they are the same people they are today that they were in college. They made mistakes, they had tragedies, they lived life, they learned and they are still learning.

No one will ever be a completely perfect human being, even the people who seemingly still have room for improvement. We are an adaptive species, as the world changes we must change with it in order to survive.

If you think about the person who you are today, think about how you treat people, and how they respond to you. Are you rude? Are you a doormat? Both of these are two opposite ends of the spectrum that don't fare well for either person at each end.

Don't think that if this is how you are labeled now, this is how you will always be. Don't get stuck in that mindset. If something in your life isn't working, think of how you can change it. Be actively productive in ensuring a better future for yourself, don't dwell in the past or even dwell on the negatives of the present just look forward. Don't expect things to happen.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
