It’s 2018 and of course theirs a new video game taking over the nation. We are no longer playing flappy bird and have moved on to bigger and better things. While maybe you personally have yet to take a ride on the battle bus, many people seem to be consistent passengers. So maybe the current Fortnite phenomenon hasn't directly affected you or your relationship but it’s definitely affected a massive amount of people.
According to Epic Games, as of January 2018, over 45 million people were playing Fortnite. It’s fair to say that number has grown exponentially in the past few months. So why is this game taking over everyone's lives?
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good ‘Victory Royale!’ as much as the next guy but do you really need to get eight wins in a row to feel victorious? Like how does one even win at all? Second place, we know her! First place, though… can’t say I have ever known her. For those of you who don’t understand the game, it’s quite simple. Basically, it is the Hunger Games on crack.
It is 100 people thrown around a map, killing people and aiming to be the last man standing. Everyone starts with nothing and you have to go running around the map looking for supplies. So basically, simply put, it’s "The Hunger Games". But isn’t "The Hunger Games" so six years ago?? Haven’t we moved on to bigger and better things? Well as they say old habits die hard and here we are!
So now we have to ask why are everyone and their mother playing this game? Twitter has been filled with memes saying how their boyfriend won’t stop playing Fortnite and how its putting strains on their relationship. In all seriousness, I don’t think Fortnite itself has ruined any relationships.
I mean if one game ruins your relationship I think your relationship had some other issues that were preventing you and your significant other from being together. But I do think it’s fair to say some people are seriously addicted to this game. Fortnite meme pages on Insta are racking over a million followers and even YouTubers are hopping on the trend.
With people such as Emma Chamberlin and Jennxpenn filming their own attempts at victory. This game reaches girls and boys of all ages and I think that alone allows the game to have such a massive impact on society.
Just like any other huge, societal trend, they tend to fade out. Here we are in 2018 and no one is begging their parents for a Wii or paying hundreds of dollars for an iPhone with flappy bird downloaded. I guess we just have to wait and see how long this fad last!
