How It Feels To Die First In Your "Fortnite" Squad

Being the first one to die in your squad is always the worst feeling.

So here you are again, squaded up with your friends ready to get the Victory Royale that seems to have eluded you game after game. You’ve had a long, stressful day, and you’re ready to kick back and game with your friends on "Fortnite" for the rest of the night.

You’ve got your snacks ready, your drink off to the side, your parties ready to go, and you’re in the pregame lobby discussing where you guys are going to land. After some heated back and forth you finally decide to land "Retail Row." This is your spot. When you’re playing solos, this is where you go. You know it like the back of your hand. You know exactly the route you’re going to take.

The battle bus floats in, and you and your squad anticipate the perfect time to jump in order to land first and maximize the amount of loot you grab before all hell breaks loose. You jump and dive towards the ground, picking your spot to pull your glider and safely land on your building. Once you touch down you enter your building through the roof, of course, sweeping each room, grabbing every gun, every med, every ammo crate, every hidden chest. You end up with decent gear and you’re feeling confident that this is your game.

However, little to your knowledge, another squad has landed close by and one of them has spotted you. In the chest he opened up, he got a bolt action sniper and now he's on the roof, waiting for you to emerge from your building. Now that you’re geared up you decide to make your move toward the rest of your squad. You exit through the front door because you’re not expecting somebody to be waiting for you, but he is. The second he sees you he takes his shot and you’re knocked down.

Instantly a wave of panic comes over you as you call out his location and tell your squad to get over to you. “He’s going to eliminate, get over here now!!” “I’m coming,” one of your teammates calls out, but he’s too far away. Another shot comes in and that’s in, you’ve been eliminated before the game even really started.

Now you’re forced to watch in agony as the rest of your squad loots your character and plays on the rest of the match without you. It’s only the first game of the night, but your character is dead, and you’re forced to watch as they play on without you.

You hear them in the chat, you hear their call outs, you watch their fights, but you have nothing to contribute, so you’re forced to sit in salty silence until the next game starts.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
