The Forthcoming Alarming Effect Of This Election On Digital Natives

A generation whose future might be heavily dictated by the slander and hate within the 2016 presidential election.

The Forthcoming Alarming Effect Of This Election On Digital Natives
The Urban Twist

In the most bizarre presidential election thus far, it is important to look at the varying demographics of voters and be aware of the significant influence that this debate, surrounded by mindless spewing of slander, can have on the mindsets of the younger generation.

In a way that is not intended to refute the views of either candidate, it becomes crucial in a time such as this to spread the idea that a lack of educated thoughts and the ridiculous denigration being spread, has generated a strong stigma of hate throughout the country- greater than any standard political differences.

The existential crisis in which our country has fallen into can be looked at in a predominantly comedic fashion, but the reality of the situation and potential impeding chain of disaster is much greater than the humor within the idea that our presidential race has become the laughing stock of the world. In a country founded on the notion that the law is to serve the citizens, rather than victimize and dictate the decisions of the people, there is no chance towards an encouraging and healthy future for Generation Z, with the way in which the bulk of society is treating each-other during this election, and the decisions of the candidates.

As gracefully said by Michelle Obama in her last speech,

“This isn’t about politics. It’s about basic human decency.”

No, it is not about politics. While at the same time, it couldn’t be more about politics, it is the forty-fifth presidential election. An election in which one candidate proudly announced: “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose voters.” An election in which children are publicly posting about their opinions behind hating a certain candidate, whilst having little specific or educational reasoning; lacking any rational thought in a true political sense. Michelle Obama recognizes the surreal natures of this election and the severity of the results, while noting how equally important it is for the general public to become educated, and aware of the negative influence that open-ended and offensive statements may have on children and the decency of humankind.

When advocating for any political party, there must be a certain level of justification towards backing either candidate. A child should never be exposed to the immense degree of relentless disrespectful comments that encompass this election. Children, who have now created their own negative mindsets towards the race based on their atmospheres, what they’re watching on television, hearing their family members say, and the passive amount of negative campaigning found country-wide.

In order to move forward in any possible capacity or towards any positive progression, the younger generation has to be aware that while only their parents or older siblings are eligible to cast a vote, this election holds a tremendous bearing on the future of their education, families, and lifestyles. The number of children’s ears constantly exposed to such blasphemy tremendously determines the mindsets of a generation with the potential to be the most progressive and open-minded cohort there has ever been.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
