With the reaction that was received at last year's game at the Department of Defense, there was a frantic struggle to make Sunday's baseball game at Fort Bragg a reality. Cook and Company only had a little under three and a half months to convert an abandoned golf course into a baseball stadium that would leave guests in awe. Of course hosting a baseball game at Fort Bragg was a nontraditional location, which is what made the game so popular through MLB history.
Last Sunday night's game is also the only game on record to be based at an active military base. The Atlanta Braves took on the Miami Marlins and made this a baseball game to remember. Fort Bragg is where the 82nd Airborne division was stationed, therefore to further honor our troops, the game was made exclusive to the division and a guest of their choice.
Fort Bragg is known as the largest military base in the world, with more than 50,000 active personnel. As tweeted by @BBTN, "Tonight, real heroes own the night." Military personnel were also able to chat with the players, get autographs and snap a few pictures with their favorite baseball players. Both servicemen and ball players were excited for this momentous game. Christina Douglas, who has worked for the military for 12 years, called Sunday's game, "The most meaningful event I’ve seen. Major League Baseball and the Players Association have gone above and beyond for our service members, their families and the whole Fort Bragg community.” Tony Petitti, MLB’s Chief Operating Officer, also commented that, “We received a reaction of 'Wow, this is out of the blue, but really exciting,’” and there was all-around positive comments by service women and men.
The national anthem was sang by Staff Sargent Tracy Gregg of the 82nd airborne and nearing the end of the "Star Spangled Banner," four Apache helicopters flew over the stadium. After that, there were no more surprises and a regular baseball game was played.
Marlins starter, Adam Conley, adds that Fort Bragg field was the best place he has ever pitched in. Marlins also won 5-2, but Fort Bragg's game was such a momentous occasion for all of the ball players and the 82nd airborne division. It was simply impossible to leave that stadium without a smile on their faces.
