The Forgotten Odette

With all of the post-Gilmore press being on Rory the monster, I wanted to shine some light on a key but forgotten figure in Rory's wake.

In the aftermath of the Gilmore Girls revival, we can all agree that Rory is the WORST, Lorelei and Luke need a communication therapist, Emily is totally badass, and Emily and Paris deserve a 1.5 hour episode devoted just to them. There is one character that played a major role in the show without making an appearance and just being whispered about here and there - Odette.

Besides being Logan's heiress Parisian fiance who is made to look like a fool thanks to his ongoing emotional and physical relationship with Rory, we know nothing about this woman. What does she look like? Does she fit Shira's image of an ideal daughter-in-law? Is she tolerant enough to put up with Logan and his friends full time? Is she having her own affair? Is she too good for Logan?

Since Amy Sherman-Palladino left the answer to these questions up to our own imaginations, I am going to write out my own character description for Odette.

Odette is 35 years old and a distant relation to King Louis XVI. Most people mistake her for a model thanks to her height, size, looks, and style. She lives by herself in a classic pre-war penthouse that is decorated in a mix of 18th century wealthy Parisian style with modern touches here and there. Since Odette is an heiress, she does not work and pays for her lifestyle with family money. She spends her time shopping, socializing with friends, visiting cultural attractions, and traveling the world. Due the insistence of her parents that she needs to do something constructive with her time, she joined the boards of a few modern art galleries. She favors top wine and champagne to any other alcoholic beverage besides the occasional Islay scotch. Besides the occasional flirt here and there, Odette is not carrying on an affair like Logan. The reason for that is that she really could not care less about it. She knows she can have any man she wants whenever she wants, so she feels no need to validate herself with a side piece. Yes, Odette is snobby. And yes, she is too good for Logan. She is only with him because she finds him to be a fun younger play thing. Plus, it is an added benefit that she gets to annoy her parents by marrying someone less wealthy and prominent than herself. Her move to London with Logan is not permanent. She will be back in Paris soon enough, and with Logan in tow.

Will Logan and Odette last? Of course not. Is their relationship strong enough to keep Logan away from Rory? Yes, but not out of love and devotion to each other. Logan already proved love is not the core of his relationship with Odette. But once she is in his life full time, she will be in complete control of him. Sorry Rory, your Bambi eyes aren't going to get you the man this time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
