Don't Forget About Your Past

The experiences that we've had makes us the person we are today.

Don't Forget About Your Past

Many times my Pinterest feed is filled with quotes about the past and forgetting it. One of the quotes that I see most often is "Don't look back, you're not going that way". Although, it is important to look ahead at the wonderful things that life holds for you, it is also important to look at the things of the past. Look at them, not dwell on them. The events of your past have made you who you are today. Pondering these events can help you realize all of the blessings that God has given you.

In a recent conversation with my wonderful roommate, I realized that although there were mistakes in my past, they all taught me something valuable. Each and every person has a different past and a different way that they were raised, but those experiences are what they have become. Therefore, the past is important.

Now, I do not think that one should dwell on the past and all that has gone wrong, but look back at the mistakes that have happened and discover what you gained from them. And not all of the past is bad. There are definitely positive memories from the past. Those memories made you the person you are today just as much as the mistakes did. It is important that we don't just forget about the past altogether. The past can guide us to where we want to be as a person, and it can help us to guide others.

One of my very best friends wrote us (me and my other friends) a letter last year to thank us for being with her through the awkward stages of junior high. She told us that the people at college only knew who she had become, but we knew who she was and the beautiful young woman she became. That is something that is so special and has stuck with me since the day she read us the letter. The friends of "old" have known you through some of the most awkward stages of your life, and they have guided you to become the person you are today. The new friends that you are making or have made know the person that you became, the not-so-awkward young adult.

Be thankful for your past and the lessons that you learned from it. The experience may have been awful in the moment and for many moments after, but hopefully you can look back at it now and see the growth that you gained from said experience. The Lord has a plan and we should trust that plan. He has given you so many wonderful learning opportunities. Be proud of the person that you have become and the steps you took to get there.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
