This year during finals week, Professor Betsy Allen-Pennebaker's COR-330-10/51 students are going to host a bake sale featuring authentic Austrian cuisine. All of the funds raised will be donated to Helfen Wie Wir, an Austrian organization committed to helping refugees in the country.
My group, cleverly named Bundt Buds, will be making Old Marbled Gugelhupf. Since it is essentially a bundt cake, we figured it would sell relatively easily. It's familiar enough that people won't be intimidated, yet the name is strange enough to rouse interest. We'll be selling them at $2.00 per slice with a napkin included. If you don't carry cash, no need to worry, as a SquareSpace card reader will be available.
Helfen Wie Wir, or Help Like Us, is the charity we collectively chose because we decided it was best suited for what we're looking to assist. Over the course of the semester, refugees were brought up several times due to conflict in the Middle East and a few European countries' willingness to help them, including Germany and Austria. A few students from the other class did research on the charity and found:
“Helfen Wie Wir” focuses primarily on education and healthcare services, but they also help link volunteers and hosts to relief agencies where they can contribute time and shelter. They have raised and distributed 2 million Euros among the humanitarian agencies they represent and that figure excludes donations of time, materials, and housing.
The entire bake sale will be taking place in the lobby outside the Alumni Auditorium from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. There will be a variety of goods available, including beverages.
Disclaimer: I can't speak for all groups, but mine will be selling a product with gluten, eggs and dairy products in it. There's a possibility that other groups may be selling products with nuts in them. If you've any food allergies please be aware of this before purchasing.
