I Thank You

An open letter to my bestfriend.

We talk every day, yet I definitely don’t say thank you enough. I could never thank God enough for placing you in my life when He did, despite the super awkward timing. You’ve been there for me when no one else was and I’d be willing to bet you know me better than I know myself. For everything you’ve ever done, everything you do, and everything you have yet to do but I know you will, I thank you.

I thank you for always being supportive of my decisions and endeavors, because most of the time they’re spontaneous and not very thought out. I don’t always make the best decisions (and neither do you) and that’s why we’re the perfect pair of friends. I thank you for pushing me, even when I don’t want to be pushed. Too often I’m nervous about something and you shove confidence into me like no one else can, and make me do it; because, what the heck.

I thank you for being my person to have a cry fest with when we’re both tired of holding it all in. I thank you for always being the ONE person I can count on to go eat excessive chips and salsa with and not be judged. Without you, I’d be alone and fat. I thank you for always helping me on mystic words because I’m not the best at it and we both know it.

I thank you for so many countless memories and so many endless nights, that I can guarantee we don’t remember. Those were some of the best, with friends we’ve lost along the way, but can never forget. I’m so glad I share those memories with you. I thank you for never judging me for my obsession with animals and naps. I’m a weirdo. But you love me anyway.

I thank you for being my biggest fan. I could have never done some of the things I have without you. When something good happens, you’re the first person I want to tell because I know you’ll understand my excitement. And when something bad happens, you’re the first person I run to because you’ll be the first to try and make me laugh.

I thank you for being that friend that makes sure I get home safe or have enough food to eat, that’s just plain awesome. You always put others before yourself, and for that, I envy you. I thank you for always telling me I’m beautiful when I’m sad. But what you don’t know is you’re beautiful too, and even more so on the inside.

I thank you for your brutal honesty. Most people couldn’t be as real as you are and Lord knows I could use it sometimes. Who else could I ask if I look fat and wouldn’t lie? And the most reassuring thing; knowing that even when it all hits the fan, my world is crashing down, and I have no one else… I have you.

I thank you for laughing with me, or at me, whichever. Even though we both know I’m hilarious. No one else understands my jokes and sarcasm quite like you. I thank you for all the memories we have made, sharing my happiest of moments with me, and never giving up on me. I thank you for all those times you dragged me to church because I got to see God working through you to me, when you knew I needed it the most.

So, I thank you for loving me, accepting me, and never trying to change me. I thank you for being your wonderful self and being with me through it all. I thank you for being the sister I never had, the extra daughter to my family and the best friend I have always needed.

I wouldn’t want to do life without you.

Stay fly, Rose Bud.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
