In The Wake Of Recent Events

In the world we live in, optimism is key.

My heart goes out to all of the families and friends of the victims of recent events. The world has become a scary place to reside in. Every day we hear about bombings and shootings and killings of every kind. We fear for our friends, neighbors, and families because no one knows where the next attack will be. We have started to live in a world where our mentality is “Where will the next attack occur?” rather than “I hope it does not happen again” because these tragedies keep occurring.

We live in a world that dreams of peace, but can never take the steps to achieve it. We live in a nation that stands for freedom, but individuals use this freedom as an excuse for violence. Where does this stop? And sadly, I have to ask, "will it ever?"

It is sad that young and old people alike think “In twenty years where will this world be?” And our gut feeling is we will not be in any place good. We think it will only get worse. The constant tragic events leave little room for optimism. You think about having a family of your own someday and fear for the world that you will be bringing them into. You are afraid to grow up and live in this world and see where it goes.

But this fear, these tragedies, are the reasons that we have to fight back now. We have to actively resist violence to keep ourselves, our neighbors, our families, our nation, and our world a safe place to live. Now is the time to take action. Nearly, every day, innocent people in the world are dying at the hands of those who think nothing of violence. People who think nothing of killing large numbers of people. Those who see men, women, and children limp in a pool of their own blood and have no emotion regarding it.

Our world has become a tragic place, a scary place, a place in which violent acts occur too often. A place in which we cower in fear at the hands of others. Where we are skeptical of everyone and their intentions. But we should not cower in fear. We should defy and resist violence together not alone. Power comes in numbers. We hold the power to change this world and create a safe one without worry.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
