Move theaters are probably one of my favorite places to go. There is nothing more satisfying than sitting in a dark room, with a huge screen, in a hopefully comfy chair to watch a story unfold. I have always loved going to the movies, but I have discovered less and less people are going to the theatres. Consequently, the tickets and concessions are becoming more and more expensive.
Over my Easter break, I got to sneak into the theatre twice. I saw matinee showings of "Love, Simon" and "If I Can Only Imagine." I highly recommend both! However, I was pretty bummed that one matinee ticket was $7, and a small popcorn and drink totaled to around $11. It cost me $18 each to see and enjoy each movie. No wonder, my family or friends don't go anymore.
Movie theaters have been a huge part of American culture since they first played in the early 1900s. I would hate to see them fade away because of interest loss, price rise, and the arrival of instant streaming of movies on the Internet.
I am guilty of sneaking snacks into the movies with my friends because we couldn't afford their concessions. So I totally get the temptation, but if you are able I encourage you to go to your nearest theater and see a film.
Yes, leave your home and couch and go see a film that you can't stream on Hulu or Netflix. I know, terrifying.
Don't be afraid to go by yourself either. It's my favorite thing sometimes. I can laugh or cry without anyone judging me, nobody steals my popcorn, and I fall fully into the story's world. And, for the love of all that is good in the world please don't be that person who won't get off their phone and ruins the movie for everyone.
My hope is that if more people go, the prices can go down and more stories can meet the eyes and minds of those meant to hear them. Seeing movies in the theater builds memories beyond the film itself.
You and the rest of the audience create this unspoken bond that is rare in modern society. You laugh or cry at all the same parts, and you all feel that sigh when the credits start to roll and some inspirational song plays.
Movie premieres like the Harry Potter ones create moments where people can watch their favorite stories and characters come to life in a community who loves that world as much as them. Independent films that you may have never heard of if you hadn't looked up movie listenings could touch your heart. Movie theaters are more than just screens and popcorn coated floors. There a place of memories, emotions and community.
For the love of the cinema, for the love of culture go see a movie.
