To My Person

You are the Cristina to my Meredith, the Izzy to my George, my person.

Recently I have just begun to re-watch all of the seasons of Grey's Anatomy from the beginning. If you are familiar with the show, you know that the main character, Meredith Grey, and Cristina Yang are #bestfriendgoals. Their "thing", if you will, is that they are each others "person". This has become one of the many infamous quotes that has been taken from the show. As I am re-watching the episodes, I started thinking about my person, and how much they mean to me. And so, this is for My Person. Thank you for always being there.

I will never forget the first day of freshman year. We were in homeroom, sitting silently, nervous for the first day of high school and you lightened the mood, breaking the silence and making small talk with the teacher. Your pure exuberance immediately calmed my anxiety, and I can specifically remember thinking, "I want to be her friend."

And then throughout the following days, you made even more of an impression on me as you were constantly making jokes during English class and making us all laugh. And of course, the way we met, when you walked up to me and two other people with a mustache drawn on your face and asked "is my mustache even?". From that moment forward we were friends.

You may look at these memories as embarrassing, but I see them as endearing. I am so incredibly happy that we became friends. We have both come so far and grown so much. I feel like a proud parent, watching how much you have grown and matured and the things that you have overcome.

You have been there for me through so much, even when I would shut down and cut myself off from everyone, you were still there for me when I resurfaced.

You are the one person that I know in real life who understands the fandom life, and that seems frivolous, but it's surprisingly comforting to have someone to gush to over your fave, even if you can't relate.

One of my absolute favorite memories is the time that we took a trip to New York City for the ABC Upfronts and met the casts of Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away with Murder. Not only did we meet some amazing people, just experiencing an opportunity like that with you was amazing.

You are my person. You're like my sister. When I have no one else, I know that I have you. You're always there. You are such an inspiration, and I am so incredibly proud of you. It makes me so emotional to think about incredible of a person you are and how you light up every room that you walk into.

Our high school career is almost over, I can't wait to see what college has in store for us. To all of these memories, and many more to come.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
