An Open Letter To My Long-Distance Best Friend

Best friends forever.

An Open Letter To My Long-Distance Best Friend
Rebecca Franssen

When we said we were best friends forever in middle school, we never thought we would make it to where we are today.

When I discovered that 400 miles would separate us, I was sure that forever just meant until you left. But it didn't. Somehow I was lucky enough to have someone who genuinely remembered to talk to me, to plan trips to visit me and vice versa, to FaceTime me whenever we could. Those friends you see at school everyday are easy to talk to. You see them, you talk to them, you remember them. But I was hundreds of miles away and you talked to me and remembered I was there.

All I can say to that is thank you. Thank you for putting me above the friends that were easy to keep around. Thank you for always making time for me even though our schedules have been completely opposite since we have been apart. Thank you for showing me that the proximity of your friends means nothing when they don't make an effort. You have cared for me more deeply, more lovingly, and more unquestionably than anyone else.

You have shown me what love is. You answer my hysterical phone calls at night and listen to me patiently, even if you have no idea what is going on. You make an effort to see me if you're in town, even when it takes time from your family. You worked hard for our friendship when it would've been so simple to give up. Thank you for caring so much about me.

But even more-so, thank you for reminding me of every embarrassing, awkward, and dorky thing I have ever done. I will never be able to live down anything I did in middle school because of you. And I wouldn't want it any other way.

Thank you for picking up right where we left off. I am always my best, silliest self with you. We act like we have never been apart. We go on the same adventures we always did, but now we can drive and aren't making our parents go crazy. We just never miss a beat.

Thank you for knowing that our friendship is a two way street. We both put in 100% effort; it's never 50-50. You committed to me. And I am grateful everyday to have someone who thinks I'm worthy of the effort, the extra time, and sometimes the stress.

Most importantly, I want you to know how much you mean to me. That quiet girl I met at school is my favorite person. She knows my darkest secrets, my deepest fears, and my biggest dreams. It takes a special person to stay in a long distance BFF-ship, but you're the best at it. I love you most, and I am grateful for you everyday.

Distance means nothing with you by my side.

Love,

Your Best Friend

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
