Poetry On Odyssey: For Every Young Mother, Thank You

Can't believe you were a kid about to raise your own.

World was about to change and you had to do it all alone.

These guys like to plant their seeds and forget to water.

Then you tell them the news, they say the answer's slaughter.

But that wasn't you, you were better than that.

Independent woman with the weight of the world on her back.

People talked, people laughed, and people judged.

But you always had the love of the man up above.

You're the definition of brave, definition of strong.

Loving, caring, loyal––that's the definition of Mom.

Not too long ago we were kids just trying to grow up.

Life is funny cause it doesn't warn you before it shows up.

Now we just young adults just trying to make it through the day.

Through your trials and tribulations, I know you going to find a way.

You'll never be alone, don't forget that we got you.

And never let the opinions of the world ever stop you.

I hope you never cry, never shed a tear.

If you feel like giving up, know that happiness is near.

I just want to scream so loud for you.

I just want you to know that I'm proud of you.

Matter of fact, I don't believe I've ever seen you cry.

Don't know if you were strong for yourself or your little guy.

Can't wait to see him grow up and all the things he'll accomplish.

Wonder how proud he'll be of his mama when you graduate college.

I hope he never does, the bad things that we did.

And when he's old enough to know, tell him this part is for him.

I don't ever want to hear that you disrespected your mother.

No matter how old you get, let her know that you love her.

She was there when you were a baby and couldn't take care of yourself.

It wasn't a marriage, but she was with you in sickness and in health.

And don't believe the world, there ain't a thing you can't do.

Anything is possible as long as you believe in you.

And as for your mother, she's going to do great things.

She might make mistakes, but that's what being human brings.

One day you're going to grow up and know exactly how she feels.

And finally, understand everything a smile conceals.

I hope you never cry, never shed a tear.

If you feel like giving up know that happiness is near.

I just want to scream so loud for you.

I just want you to know that I'm proud of you.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
