You may know the album "For Emma, Forever Ago" by artist Bon Iver. Maybe you just know the most popular song on the album, "Skinny Love." Or, you may know the reason for me writing this story, which is the fact that Justin Vernon - the singer-songwriter who goes by the name Bon Iver - created "For Emma, Forever Ago" self-isolated in a cabin in northwestern Wisconsin over three months.
The album became a success upon its release, being certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Vernon has said Emma is the name of his college girlfriend, who he struggled to get over and was part of the motivation for songs on the album.
Vernon's isolation is different than what most of us are suffering today. He spent three months in the harsh winter in his father's hunting cabin while in Wisconsin. Vernon hunted for food and usually saw people only every two weeks or so when he went into town to trade what he hunted.
The album that came from this isolation has been labeled as one of the best indie-folk albums of all time, and one of the best albums of the 2000s, being released in 2007. Pitchfork and Rhapsody placed it within the Top 30 Albums of the Decade and Observer Music Monthly named it the best album of the year.
I hope someone is able to create their own greatness in this time, and others fall in love with "For Emma, Forever Ago."
With most colleges and universities not going back to school until August, we have a lot of time to change who we are and do something positive. Don't waste this time. Find something more productive than "Tiger King." Make something out of this. Make art. Make love. Make peace. Learn how to control emotions and forgive or be more progressive. Be a better person to yourself and others. Become more intellectual, more loving, more fun. Use this time wisely and don't be afraid to change for yourself and try to obtain something great, as Vernon did.
