Seven Foods That Taste Better In Southern California

On this extremely busy and romantic Valentine’s Day, I had some time to think about all of my favorite foods… which led me to then realize how much better so many of them are in the great state of California (also known as home). If this doesn’t make you want to plan your next trip out West, I don’t know what will.

In-N-Out Burger

California staple. In-N-Out is my first stop when arriving back in sunny Southern California, and I couldn’t defend its honor more. I also think it’s a near proven fact it doesn’t taste as good in some of the other random states it has expanded to (cough Arizona), leaving me to suspect there are some special ingredients found only in California that make it what it is. Man, I am just dreaming of a double double with animal fries right now (yeah we all love the not so secret menu).

Restaurant to try: In-N-Out (obviously)

Acai Bowls

I’ve experienced acai bowls in a few places (Nashville, Sydney, New York)…and can confidently say there is something special about ones in California. I don’t know if it’s the granola, I don’t know if it’s the acai mix, but California acai bowls are the perfect summer breakfast staple, and I challenge other states to step up their game. California has the perfect sweet smoothie texture and fruit balance down to a science.

Restaurant to try: Acai Cafe, 1622 Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277

Avocados

Avocados (and guac) genuinely taste better in Southern California. This is probably due to the fact they’re grown there (and fresher), but as an avo addict, I am highly incentivized to stay as close to the west coast as I can just to experience my favorite green food in any form.

Restaurant to try: your local grocery store (in Southern California)

Tacos

California Mexican food knows what is up. It’s fresh, it’s simple, and it’s just plain good. Tex-mex is great for the occasional meal, but California Mexican sounds good any time of the day, and doesn’t feel heavy. Tacos specifically are easy to find and easily really good most places you go. Might be the proximity to Mexico, but Mexican food in California is better than anywhere else.

Restaurant to try: Mercado, 1416 4th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401

Sushi

This one is a given but has to be acknowledged. California has the best sushi around. It’s fresh and it’s abundant—there are sushi places all over, and you know you’re getting quality fish (most places). I am dreaming of salmon avocado rolls from my favorite hole in the wall joint and can’t wait till we are reunited.

Restaurant to try: Flying Fin, 1727 South Catalina Ave, Redondo Beach, CA 90277

Dumplings

You might not have thought this one to be as obvious, but Southern California has an awesome pan-Asian food culture. As a result, dumplings run rampant. One of my favorite foods, I can find these at the many Thai restaurants in the South Bay and can assure you they are worth ordering because they are bound to be great.

Restaurant to try: Manhattan Beach Post, 1142 Manhattan Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

**Not an Asian restaurant, but menu changes seasonally and dumplings are currently on it... guaranteed to be amazing

Breakfast Burritos

Playing off the taco point, breakfast burritos are a huge thing in California, and cure any potential hangover or Sunday scaries you might be having. There is no better excuse to eat a burrito for breakfast, and while they are likely to be found at more hidden locations, are undeniably a California fare that locals swear by.

Restaurant to try: Phanny's, 1021 S Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
