Most people who watch sports knows that Superbowl Sunday is basically one of the biggest American holidays. It brings the entire country together to witness the victor of the biggest game of the year. It gives Americans another reason to drink, eat, and party. There are even some people who only watch the Superbowl for the commercials. While the commercials are fun to watch, I watch the Superbowl for two reasons: I love watching football, and I love my mom's food.
Let's be honest, watching the Superbowl isn't truly great without the food served at the party. Every year, my family throws a Superbowl party for family friends and guests to commune on this unofficial holiday. So what's on the menu to make a great party?
Over the years, different guests have brought their own delicious recipes. One of the most memorable dishes I ever had was a spinach dip that a family friend brought a few years ago. Some people may each spinach dip with chips, but I prefer to eat it with sourdough bread. Sourdough is the better choice because of its crunchy crust and soft center. I'm not sure what the secret was to that spinach dip (there might have been avocado involved), but it was a touchdown in terms of Superbowl snacks.
And of course there have to be snacks before the main course is served. One of the best to have at a Superbowl party is a classic cheese and crackers tray. I'm pretty sure my mom always buys the platter at Safeway, but its variety makes it a real winner. The platter is served with three different cheeses, usually cheddar, Swiss, and pepper jack, along with salami or ham, and finally the vegetables and dip.
Another classic snack of choice are pigs in a blanket. This is a dish that can be served up to everyone with a little bit of cheese dip. I've never had home made cheese dip, but I can always settle with the Safeway options. In my opinion, if you're going to host a Superbowl party, you need to make sure someone brings the queso and chips. Why, you may ask? When anyone walks into the party they will immediately look for chips and dip, and if you provide a cheese dip then I bet your guests will leave with no complaints.
Lastly, everyone looks for the main course served before halftime. For my family, we always await my mom's famous chili. I remember one year she surprised up with chili dogs, which naturally put me into a food coma. A full bowl of chili with a side of sourdough bread will typically satisfy the family. All we need is to add a little bit of onions and shredded cheese and our party is the best I know.
Our party may not be the biggest, but we certainly have the Superbowl party essentials (AKA food) that you need to have a great time.
