With all of the current racial bias and racist events happening throughout the United States, many people turn to social media to spread eyewitness accounts and vital information to account for what "actually happened," not what the media is trying to spread. However, it is hard to keep all of this incoming information straight, and to determine what is true and what is not. An easy solution for this issue is to follow Deray Mckesson on Twitter at @deray.
Mckesson, a former school administrator, is now one of the leading modern civil rights activists. He has been present for a majority of major civil rights protests and events over the past few years, including Ferguson and Baltimore after the murders of Mike Brown and Freddie Gray. Mckesson provides his own eyewitness accounts and retweets articles and other tweets referring to other true eyewitness accounts from these major events. These accounts range from solidarity to police brutality. Many videos, pictures, and experiences of extreme police brutality are shared through social media, and Mckesson retweets all of them.
Mckesson does more than just follow protests, however. He also is part of a group of activists called We the Protesters who organize protests against racial injustices throughout the country. Mckesson and this organization recently met with democratic presidential hopefuls Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton to discuss what needs to be done nationally to decrease these large amounts of racial crimes happening throughout the United States.
While he has many followers and supporters, Mckesson has also faced many racist instances while following protests. For instance, while organizing protests in Charleston, South Carolina, a hashtag was started on Twitter, #GoHomeDeray. Mckesson was there to protest in solidarity for the nine lives lost when Dylan Roof opened fire on an African American church. However, these people on Twitter were demanding he leave the city. This instance just shows the prevalence of racism in our current society, especially when Mckesson organizes peaceful protests for just causes.
So, if you're looking for a way to stay up to date on the current civil rights movement, an easy way is to follow @deray. He tweets frequently, with all relevant information to highlight what is really happening in our country.
