When you hear someone is going down South for school, there are probably only a few things that really come to mind about their new home. Most are stereotypes, thrown around jokingly by people farther up North. But I am here to tell you that there is truth to the claims and the jokes you've heard. And there's so much more they've never even told you about.
The College Sports
Since I go to an arts conservatory, this isn't something I can really give a personal anecdote about. But judging by the amount of Wake Forest gear available at our local mall, I think it's safe to say that this college town is pretty passionate about its big teams.
The Food
Would it really be the South if not for the plethora of deep-fried, deliciousness that is good ol' Southern cooking? The answer is a big N-O. From Cracker Barrel to Cook-Out it's easy to see why the Freshman 15 is so easy to gain. Who could say no to biscuits and Bojangles?
The Accent
And the slang! Some of my first friends here, aside from my fellow Northern roomie, confirmed the rumors I'd heard of the Southern belle drawl. But trust me, within the first week of being here, you start accidentally blessing hearts and y'all-ing before you can even stop and catch yourself.
The Heat
Personally, my least favorite part of the climate down here. Rain or shine, thick humid air and climbing temperatures make the walk across campus unbearable. I thought I was ready for the summer temps. After this week, though... I'm not so sure.
The Style
Southern ladies share a love of Lilly. Pulitzer, that is. Her prints are everywhere you turn. But if you can't find (or afford) her style, don't worry. Simply Southern and Vineyard Vines can also be found at all your local retailers. But if you don't plan on also adding a monogram to you final purchase, you might as well forget it.
The People
That's right, the people here are just as friendly and welcoming as every movie or TV show has ever made you believe. People are more than happy to help you out, and always seem ready to make you feel home. And when you're still trying to get comfortable in a new place, that's all that really matters.
