I’m flying. In an airplane of course let’s not get metaphorical. In the middle of the atmosphere, over the middle of the ocean, in the middle of the night. And what do I do on this 8-hour flight? Watch movies of course! Along with a bit of squirming, a few bare-footed trips to the toilet closet, some choking down of a really mediocre “in-flight hot meal,” I mostly just sit and stare at a screen like the majority of the other passengers around me. But my little brother, my dear 10-year-old little brother, directs my attention to the window. Now usually I love to look out the window on flights. I like to look at the tiny houses and imagine those little people in their little cars in their busy lives just going about their day, or marvel at the landscape (my favorite is flying over the Grand Canyon or anywhere with thick green forests). But this time I was too sucked into “You’ve Got Mail” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” to notice what was outside my window. But Rory taps my shoulder from behind and says, “Look outside! You can see the big dipper! It’s just behind the wing!” And sure enough there it was. The night sky is so dark the stars shine brighter than I’ve seen in a long time (living in Vegas doesn’t allow for much star gazing). But the most amazing thing is, the constellations I normally would crane my neck to see, looking far up into the night sky, are right in front of me. I feel as if I’m in the sky with the stars. It’s so beautiful. As hard and stressful as this move has been on my whole family, it really feels amazing to just forget it all for a while and almost literally fly among the stars.
