Attending the University of Florida comes with countless perks. Not only is your education ranked as one of the best among public universities across the nation, but you also have at your disposal an overwhelming selection of “complimentary” UF facilities and services included in your tuition fees. On any given day, Gators can be seen enjoying some of these benefits — from relaxing on the shore of Lake Wauburg to getting a fix of endorphins at one of the two gym facilities. There’s no doubt that #itsgreatuf. But are UF students taking advantage of all of that the school has to offer? Here are just some of the free resources available that you might not have known about.
Fitness Assessment Center
Ever wonder where your physical fitness stands? Whether you’re an avid gym goer or new to the Southwest scene, any fitness goal is incomplete without being able to gauge your progress. Lucky enough, UF offers fitness appraisal services Monday through Friday, and all it will cost is about 30 minutes of your time. Choose between Shape, Power, Balance, or Sport to create a custom-fit test that will not only help you see where you stand, but also how to improve as your appraisal team member can help translate your results into a useful workout program. Scheduling an appointment is as easy as visiting the Training Center inside Southwest Recreation Center.
Rietz Union Leisure Courses
Attending one of the best public universities often means being subjected to some of the most rigorous academic courses. Take a break from it all and take a fun class at the Rietz Union. Some of them cost a small additional fee, but where else can you sign up for Bartending 101, pottery and dance classes all in the same place? Classes range from sports to arts and crafts and everything in between. Go online to register at the beginning of each semester.
Resume and Cover Letter Clean-Up
Gators can rest assured knowing that while UF provides the tools and experiences to add to your resume, they can also help you get it all down on paper. It is easy to list your accomplishments, but when it comes to applying for jobs and internships, many first-timers have a hard time constructing a professional resume or cover letter. Fortunately, the Career Resource Center is fully equipped to show you the ropes. Just make an appointment with a Career Planning staff member and you will have a revised and ready resume for any occasion.
Nutrition Services
The “Freshman 15” can be real, but UF can help you learn how to steer clear of college-related health ailments with your very own dietician. Located in the Infirmary Building, visits are free and able to help students with things such as weight control, living with a specialized diet and general nutrition information. Forms for appointments can be found on UF’s Student Health Care Center website, along with additional offered resources.
University Writing Center
Writing is an inevitable aspect of the college experience, and it is not always as easy as it looks. For students in search of extra help, the University Writing Center is staffed with professional writing tutors throughout the semester who will work one-on-one with students to develop their papers. You may not be the next literary genius of your generation, but your paper will be on point. The Writing Center is located in Tigert Hall for scheduling tutor appointments.
Stress-Relief Puppies
That’s right, I said puppies. At the end of each semester, the Rietz Union and the Division of Student Affairs hosts their De-Stress Study Fest. They have everything from smash bash (to help you relax from finals stress), study areas, chair messages, and therapy animals. All events are free of charge and listed on the Rietz Union Resources website. At least there is something to look forward to during finals week.
