Voting is very important. With all that is going on in our country, your voice matters. If you're trying to get more involved this is the perfect time because Election Day is around the corner. On Tuesday, August 28th, the Florida Primary Election will be held. This is the time where the major political parties, Democratic and Republican, get nominated to be voted for in the General Election on November 6th, 2018. Voter registration and vote-by-mail are all options for you to vote but sometimes the campaigns need more than just a vote.
Here are 5 things you can do in this local election besides just voting:
1. Direct contact by canvassing door-to-door.
Canvassing is honestly a huge thing that candidates need help when running. Canvassing gets the name out of the candidate to potential voters. Volunteers go door-to-door to persuade undecided potential voters, add voters to a registered voter list, and more. The houses are selected from a list generated from a voter database. This is the most needed task a candidate needs for an election. Campaigns are desperate for volunteers and appreciate the help immensely. For students, high school or college, you can add this to a resume or even get volunteer hours. Canvassing door-to-door is in direct contact with the people and the most direct way to get voters. I myself am canvassing door-to-door for a candidate running in this election. If you're interested, contact your local office for the candidate you like and they will set you up!
2. Phone Banking.
Phone banking is another way to reach out to the voters. It's like canvassing but over the phone. You follow a script and talk to the potential voters. Usually, the scripts consist of the stances of the politician and conclude with "Can we count on your vote?" Again, reach out to your local campaign office for the candidate you would like to phone bank for!
3. Working at the near by polls.
Polls are found everyone in the community on Election Day. Volunteers are again needed just as much at the actual polls. So if going door to door or phone banking isn't your choice, contact the campaign and see how you can volunteer at a poll near you! The polls are where all the important decisions are made by citizens and it sure is important for you to be there and assist.
4. Spreading the word on social media.
Social media is a huge factor in these elections! Reaching an audience that hasn't picked a candidate yet or needs information on voting is important. Sharing pictures of voting information such as polls, dates, candidates, topic points, and more are all great things to spread the word about! Some people want to know more and just don't see or hear about it. So posting about it can help someone else out!
5. Attending your candidates rally!
Attending a rally for a candidate is not just a fun time but super educational! These candidates put a lot of effort and time into their campaigns and at a rally, you get to see your favorite candidate at their best! You see how much they care about you and your state and how much they want to do! It's an invigorating experience! Rallies are an experience altogether and a good way to know what's going on in the election. Your attendance helps out the candidates a lot by signing petitions for causes they support, signing up for more information about the candidate and their campaign, and overall boost up the confidence of the candidate. The candidate knowing you are there and supporting supports their campaign.
Remember, The Florida Primary Election is this upcoming Tuesday, August 28th. The General Election is November 6th. So no matter if you're the Democratic or Republican party, it's important for you to vote! If you are unable to vote, volunteer and take part in the options listed above! Everything counts and is greatly appreciated by your desired candidate.
