I'm not sure what kind of breed Florida drivers are, but they are definitely in their own category. Don't get me started with the way they drive in general. I'm not sure why, but when it rains, that's when everyone suddenly forgets how to drive and creates their own rules. I mean, according to this article, Florida drivers rank number-two for careless driving resulting in death.
First of all, what is the DMV doing? Because it seems like they're just handing out driver's licenses like it's free candy on Halloween. I like to think that Florida DMVs are like the Oprah of the motor-vehicle world, "You get a license, you get a license, EVERYBODY GETS A LICENSE."
Why must everyone drive with their hazards on in the rain? First of all, it's illegal. I know a lot of us Floridians don't know that word because we are Florida and the craziest news stories are born here; something being illegal doesn't really mean much. Anyway, I can't stand when I'm driving and the person in front of me has their hazards flashing and I'm not sure if they're having an emergency or not. Do I have to go around you? Are you about to stop in the middle of the road? What are you indicating?
Also, why are you all speeding? What exactly is the rush? Speeding only causes more accidents. The faster you go, the harder it is to brake, especially last minute because the roads are wet and your tires don't have enough grip to completely stop. I'm not quite sure how you even are able to fully see through your windshield when it's monsooning and you're going way over the speed limit.
I want to be able to feel safe when I'm driving, especially a short distance. I don't think that's ever going to happen in Florida. We have overconfident teens trying to show off in their shiny, new cars. We have the elderly, who half of them should have their licenses revoked. You can spot an elderly driver a mile away because they're the ones driving with their turn signal on for five minutes, claws on the steering wheel, and it looks like nobody is even sitting the seat until you spot one tiny gray Alfalfa hair sticking up. Then we have everyone in between, who are texting, Snapchatting and being extremely impatient.
So, Florida drivers, please do us all a favor. Slow down, be mindful and cautious of others. You don't own the road.
