5 Reasons The Florence 'Hurrication' Was NOT A Vacation

A week of no classes gave college kids more stress than pleasure.

The week off class, because of the evacuation due to Florence, has been labeled a "hurrication". But, was it really a vacation? Everyone loves a week off of class, but you will second-guess your love for it, after reading these five reasons.

1. The week of classes missed has to be made up on the weekends

Some students can barely make it to their classes during the week… now your Tuesday 9 AM will be meeting on a few Saturdays at 9 AM. That time missed has to be made up, which I understand, but we can all agree, we are not looking forward to those weekend classes.

2. You reached new levels of boredom

An unexpected week at home can get really boring really quick. You had no plans to do something fun and found yourself sitting in bed watching Netflix most the week. After a day or two, you desperately want to be back at school (not so much for the actual school part, but you get my point).

3. None of your highschool friends were home & you missed your college friends

A week away from school means a week away from your best friends. What makes it even worse, none of your best friends from high school got a week off of classes too. So, as I said in point 2, you reached new levels of boredom by yourself.

4. Every classes syllabus got messed up

Having your exams rescheduled and essays postponed can be awesome until you come back to school and realize you have 3 exams, 2 essays, and tons of homework due within a week of being back.

5. The "hurrication" week was a waste of having no classes

A week off classes should be spent with a pina colada in your hand and your toes in the sand, not being bored at home. The fact Florence did not really hit Charleston is so bittersweet. Obviously, I love Charleston and am happy nothing happened; but, damn... there was no reason we had to leave Charleston for a whole week.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
