Spoiler alert: This article will discuss events that took place in the second season of "The Flash," season one of "Supergirl," "The Arrow" and the comic book and animated movie adaptation of "The Flashpoint Paradox."
In the season two finale of "The Flash," Barry travels back in time and prevents his mother's death, despite the danger it may hold to the timeline. In the comic books, when Barry saved his mom, he created a paradox in which Batman's identity was Thomas Wayne, not Bruce Wayne. Barry's mom was alive, but Barry had none of his powers. Additionally, a war raged between the amazons led by Wonder Woman and the Atlanteans led by Aquaman.
Fans speculated that by the television show following this same path, the third season of "The Flash" would begin with the Flashpoint Paradox. Grant Gustin, the actor who plays "The Flash," has confirmed through Twitter that season three will be titled "Flashpoint."
The Flashpoint paradox is what led to DC comics re-vamping its heroes as some of us have seen. We have a less of a Boy-Scout Superman, Cyborg is in the Justice League and Barry Allen is now the current Flash (Barry Allen died in previous comics).
My theory for the future of the CW DC comics shows, "Legends of Tomorrow," "The Arrow," "The Flash" and "Supergirl" begins here. "Supergirl" is a recent addition to the CW lineup, as CBS previously owned it. In Season One Episode 18 of "Supergirl," The Flash had to travel through dimensions to Supergirl's Earth. Supergirl had no idea what metahumans were, and The Flash had no clue that aliens existed, meaning that on the Flash's Earth, Superman, Supergirl and other aliens didn't exist.
The CW is planning a crossover between the four DC comics shows. That could only happen if somehow Supergirl traveled to the Flash's Earth or vice versa, or if somehow their two Earths became one (hint: the flashpoint paradox). If in the comics the paradox was able to change personalities, destiny and the death of some characters, then it is fair to say, at least for the writers of these shows, that the paradox will be able to combine the worlds of Supergirl and The Flash. It is as if they were never separated to begin with. Convenient.
Other changes are possible to occur as well. Maybe we will see beloved characters come back to life (Laurel Lance), the return of a villain (Deathstroke) or new characters make an appearance (Green Lantern). I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
