Due to living in the suburbs of Philadelphia, the majority of sports fans are fans of Philadelphia teams. Philadelphia hasn’t had the “best” sports teams over the past years with the likes of the Phillies, Eagles and the struggling 76’ers. One team Philly has been strongly supporting this year is the Flyers, who are looking to secure a playoff spot and challenge to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1975. It has been 41 years since the Flyers have reigned as champions of the NHL. To put it into perspective how long it has been since the Flyers won the Cup, here are 25 big items that shaped pop culture back in 1975.

  • Gas cost 44 cents
  • Average cost of a new car was $4,250
  • President Ford signed a $2.3 Billion dollar loan
  • Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese Army ending the Vietnam War
  • Unemployment Rate was 9.2% due to the recession
  • The cost of a Superbowl ad was $107,000
  • Doctors were on strike, reducing hospital services
  • Jimmy Hoffa disappears
  • Patty Hearst was arrested after being the FBI’s Most Wanted
  • Altair 8800, first microcomputer, was released
  • JVC introduced the VHS
  • Construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline began
  • Bill Gates developed BASIC
  • Motorolla patented the first mobile phone
  • Microsoft became a registered trademark
  • Viking 1 was launched towards Mars
  • BIC created the first disposable Razor
  • Kodak created the first Digital Camera
  • The Laser Printer was invented
  • The Ford F-150 was first introduced
  • PEZ candy made its debut
  • All in the family (CBS) was the most popular TV show for the fifth year in a row
  • “Saturday Night Live” made its premiere on NBC
  • Song of the Year “Love Will Keep Us Together” by Captain and Tennille
  • Album of the Year “Still Crazy After All These Years” by Paul Simon

Hopefully the Flyers can grind out the rest of the season to secure one of the wildcard playoff spots and then pull off a few upsets to win the Cup. It is a tough task for the Flyers, but it is not impossible.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
