When I came back to school for recruitment at the beginning of August, I saw a couple girls with these metallic printed tattoos on their arms. I hadn't seen them before, and naturally me and a group of friends were curious. They're called flash tattoos, and in case you haven't heard they are the next big thing for college girls.
Temporary tattoos are not something I had purchased since I was child and just liked to try out having pictures of my favorite boy band on my forearm. Flash tattoos are not typically something I would try, but for Bid Day this year, me and a group of friends decided to buy some for the occasion. We were not the only ones. Nearly every sorority girl was covered in these gold, silver, and black tattoos. Arms, hands, even foreheads were proudly decorated. For days after bid day, we all walked around campus with the tattoos stating: yes, we are in sororities. Like the website says, they really know how to make a statement, whether its a special occasion like bid day or just a day of classes.
Flash Tattoos for those who haven't seen or heard of them are "jewelry inspired temporary tattoos". They last about 4-6 days and come off easily with baby oil. Mine started to come off on its own after about 5 days, and I just wiped off the remainder with water. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and prints to fit with a variety of fashion forward looks. Tattoos can range from small shapes and arm bands, to necklaces or shapes big enough to cover your entire arm. You can easily share a pack with your friends, but if you are going for a bolder look, you can use multiple. Prices range from $22-$30 for packs with multiple tattoos, but Etsy also has similar options at a more budget friendly price.
Now after using them for the first time, I can see why they are so popular. Its a temporary way to change up your style, and set yourself apart in your individual style. Though the website targets the surf, laidback, "saltwater loving gals", anyone can wear them and still pull it off. Maybe its just the climate or the style of Charleston, but flash tattoos aren't going anywhere as we head into fall. It's going to take more than cold weather to stop girls from rocking these tattoos.
