Five Ways to Cheer up When You're Feeling Down

As someone who spends 175% of every day stressing about everything something, I understand more than anyone how difficult it can be to remain optimistic when everything around you seems to be falling apart. Because of this, it is crucial to master specific ways to cheer up when faced with impending emotional breakdowns. At this point in my life, I tend to consider myself an expert in the aforementioned field, so this week, I would love to share with you my top five ways of cheering up when all you want to do is cry.

1. Pet a dog

I don't care if it's your dog, a neighbor's dog, or you need to head over to your local animal shelter-- find an animal to pet (*note: option three could potentially be counterproductive to boosting mood). Science has proven that cuddling with canines releases feel-good hormones throughout the body and can even lower blood pressure, which isn't surprising, considering dogs love you no matter what your current relationship/GPA/family life is going through at the moment. If you're more of a cat person and your cat doesn't hate you, then that is also definitely an option!

2. Take a bath.

I'm not talking about the average act of soaking in your own filth for twenty minutes, but actually taking a real bath. Candles, bath bombs, bubbles, and the works will not only make you smell great but feel great.

3. Go to Target.

Have you ever seen someone sad at a Target? Me neither. The place is like Disney World, but less crowded and significantly cleaner. This might not be your best bet if you're stressed about finances, but even still, the process of finding 85 new items that you can't live without is insanely gratifying.

4. Get a drink at Starbucks.

Some may call it overpriced, but there's a reason people pay $5 for a shot glass-sized cup of coffee (besides the Instagram). Maybe it's an ego thing, but I find everything about Starbucks therapeutic- from the personalized cups to the overly-enthusiastic baristas. Treat yourself. You deserve it.

5. Binge-Watch Your Favorite TV Show

Nothing makes you forget your own problems more than getting lost in the world of other people's. Sometimes, all it takes to feel better is to sit down and get emotionally-invested in your favorite characters' trials and tribulations. Yes, Netflix, I am still watching.

Hopefully, one or more of these solutions helped to improve your day. Always remember that the only place things can go from here is up.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
