5 Things You Need To Know As An Adult

There are a lot of things that your parents do for you or shield you from, and you don't really know how much they do for you until you are an adult. Once you are out living on your own whether it's in college or whether you are still living with them, but they have decided you can now make your own doctor appointments, you will realize all of the crazy and absurd things that happen in the real world. Here are five things that I think you should hear now, so hopefully they won't be too scary/annoying once you get on your own.

First, lets start with relationships. Just because you were once something with someone in high school, does not mean that you have to be with with them forever. You are now an adult, and you can choose if you even want to be friends/date them. People change and grow apart. You may always love them, but you or they aren't who they used to be, and that is okay. Being an adult is growing.

Secondly, Learn as much about budgets as you can. Without some type of budget, you will not survive the world. It may sound drastic, but its absolutely true. I know I need a budget, and I have kinda created one, but I personally need to put more effort into this.

Thirdly, invest in a printer. You will most likely need a printer if you are in school and if you are not in school, there is the chance that you will still need one whether it is for job opportunities or if its just printing off pictures. It is so convenient and comforting knowing that you have a printer in case you forget to go to the library or a public place to print off an assignment that is due in the morning. I promise you can never go wrong with a printer.

Fourthly, Stop caring what people think of you. Going back to the relationships, if you have a friend and you guys are growing apart and you don't have anything in common, it is okay to find different relationships that fit you or your life style better. Find people that encourage you and stimulate you. Find someone that will make you want to do better in life. Find who you are and find people that like exactly who are.

Lastly, learn basic cleaning and cooking skills. You may think that this is a given, but honestly I lived in a dorm last year and we had fire evacuations every other day. It is honestly sad how often people burn popcorn. Popcorn. People burnt popcorn every other day, and that is not me exaggerating. Learn how to cook pasta because that will go a long ways. Learn how to cook different types of meat because we need the protein, especially the kids who live in dorms.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
