Las Vegas is my home, and even if I move, I’ll probably always consider it as so. My family is rooted here, it’s the only home I’ve ever known, and it has a lot to offer. So whether you’re a seasoned local or a brand new tourist, here are five of my favourite places in Las Vegas
1. IKEA Las Vegas
Oh, IKEA. You and I have a beautiful and nurturing relationship. I’m sure everyone has heard of you, or at least they’ve heard that you have some delicious food and cheap furniture. Located at the southwest end of the valley, IKEA is easily a place you can spend an entire day at and get a cheap bite to eat for all three meals of the day.
2. Akohb by James Turrell at Louis Vuitton
Though you can see a small portion of the exhibit at the tram station at Crystals, you can call ahead to the Louis Vuitton store at Crystals to be dazzled by light artistry. You might get dizzy though, be careful! Expect to wait a month for a spot to visit, and the spots fill up quickly.
3. "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at Tropicana Regency Cinemas
Though I have mentioned this in a previous article of mine, it definitely deserves a spot on this list. Only happening on the first Saturday of every month, The Rocky Horror Picture Show showcases one of the most classic films of all time while exhibiting a record-breaking shadow cast. Tickets are $10 and prop kits are $2 and an overall guaranteed good time for anyone who loves Rocky Horror!
4. Zia Record Exchange
If you haven’t been to Zia, you are missing out on a truly traditional experience that your parents and their parents participated in: going to the record store. From classics to rarities to your favourite band, Zia Record Exchange has it all, and probably on vinyl, CD and cassette. Zia has always had a place in my heart since I discovered it in middle school.
5. Marjorie Barrick Museum at UNLV
You may have noticed that there isn’t much outside of First Friday when it comes to fine art. That’s where the Marjorie Barrick Museum at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas comes in. Holding multiple exhibitions, and even equipped with a small theatre, the Museum attracts student artists, famous artists and art aficionados alike. It is easily one of my favourite spots in town, and I always seem to find myself going, even if it's seeing the same thing over and over again. It is truly remarkable. Admission is free, so why not stop by?
