2017 is bringing on a lot of new music, new movies and new video games -- including an entirely new gaming console from Nintendo.
Nintendo hit an all time low in 2014 and fans have been looking for its comeback console after the Wii-U. Nintendo hinted at a new system in March of 2015, under the codename "NX". They formally announced the system in October of 2016 and gave everyone the details they've been dying for.
Here are five things you should know about the Nintendo Switch before its release in March.
1. It has multiple controller options.
The hardware of this console is truly unique. The console sits in a dock, and looks very similarly to the Wii-U. There is a large screen, with joysticks and buttons on either side. Players also have the option of taking off the "Joy-Con" controllers off the dock and using it like a Gamecube controller, like below.
2. Some awesome video games have been confirmed for the console.
Games like a sequel to Splatoon, a Sonic game, a new Mario Kart game and a new Zelda game -- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo showed exclusive game play of this game on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and it looks awesome so far!
3. It is portable.
Ever been in the middle of a great game and you have to leave the house? You have to find a save point first and that could take forever -- not anymore. Nintendo Switch has the capability of being a portable, handheld device. You simply attach the "Joy-Con" controllers to the console, take it out of the dock, and go.
4. The system is cartridge based.
That's right -- the day of discs are over for this Nintendo console. Instead, they are using cartridges like the DS and 3DS have used before. Much like their handheld systems, the cartridges can be pushed into a slot on the side of the console.
5. Rumor has it the system is less than $300.
According to IGN, an UK game retailer listed the Nintendo Switch costing £198.50. That translates to roughly $245 USD. They also have the exact release date as March 17, 2017. Nintendo has not confirmed either of these rumors, though.
