It is believed that tattoos date back to over 5,200 years ago. Over one in ten Americans have at least one piece of ink on their bodies, yet today, we still live in a society where tattoos are not widely accepted. Whether someone has tattoos for a deep, symbolic meaning or just because they think it is "cool" or "cute," they are all tired of hearing these same things over and over:
1. "Did it hurt?"
No, being repeatedly stabbed by a needle that injects permanent ink through an entire layer of skin is actually quite soothing. YES. It hurt. Although it all depends on the type of person, I can guarantee it isn't very comfortable for anyone.
2. "What does it mean?"
I cannot even keep track of how many times I have been asked this. Although I often do not mind, it does get irritating telling the story over and over again. Some people carry a very personal meaning with their ink, and do not always want to share. Unless you know the person on a personal level, do not ask.
3. "What do your parents think?"
Well, they have yet to disown me or stop talking to me since I have gotten tattoos if that is what you are asking. It is very common today for children to get matching tattoos with a parent! The tattoos on my body do not play a role in my relationship with them. They love me regardless. As should the rest of you.
4. "What if you can't get a job because of your tattoos?"
First off, I have a job now. So I obviously do not have this problem. But if that was the case, I would not want to work for an employer that would judge my abilities to be a trustworthy employee based on my tattoos. Many, many influential and successful people in today's society have tattoos. The ink on my skin does not have any effect on my work ethic or performance.
5. "Tattoos are so permanent. Why would get one?"
This may be to your surprise, but I decided to get a tattoo because of that whole idea of it being on my body forever. Each tattoo is a symbol of something I feel very strongly about, and my opinions will not change as I get older.
