Five Things I Learned From Attending Beauty School

I'm a better person because of it.

Five Things I Learned From Attending Beauty School

As many of you know, from October of 2016 to March of 2017 I attended beauty school at Douglas J Aveda Institute in East Lansing. Well, as of last Tuesday I completed my course and graduated. Over the course of the last four and a half months attending beauty school has taught me some things.

1.) Beauty School Is A Lot Harder Than It Looks

I honestly didn't think going into the program that it would be too hard. On our first day we went over what all the program would require and all the things we would be learning. Once our educator mentioned anatomy and chemistry, I immediately felt overwhelmed. I was never good at science in high school, so how was I going to learn it all in the matter of a couple days or so? I swallowed my pride and asked questions when I needed them answered and relied on friends to help me study instead of trying to do it all myself like I did in high school.

2.) Not Everyone Matures As They Get Older

No matter where you go, you'll make friends. But you'll also come across some people who think they are too good for you. They will be nice to your face, but go behind your back and be fake. Fortunately, the nice people outweigh the rude ones.

3.) You'll Meet Some Of The Best People

Let's be honest, there's a stereotype of people who attend beauty school. They are all rude, snotty, rich girls. That's not true at all. I honestly have made some of the best friends. When I enrolled, I wasn't expecting to make any friends because I'm not pretty or rich. But eventually, my class got so close we had weekly get togethers which involved food, games, laughs, and a lot of memories. I'm so thankful for our snapchat group, our inside jokes, and our friendship.

4.) Your Educators Will ALWAYS Be There For You

During my time at Douglas J, I had four educators. While they were all amazing and helpful in their own ways, two of them helped me on a more personal level. They understood my anxiety, my depression, and that I'm different than most of the students there. They helped me through every step of that program and I honestly owe all of my success in school to them. They made me feel important, smart, and like I was worth more than I gave myself credit for. One of them even told me to keep in touch with her after I graduated and that made me feel so thankful to have her. I'm so thankful for all of them because I definitely couldn't have made it through the program without them.

5.) I Don't Give Myself Enough Credit

I'm a hell of a lot smarter than I ever thought I was. I'm actually a very good student. That is something I never thought I could ever say about myself. In high school I felt so dumb and uneducated because I never retained any of the information, but now I can tell you a lot of the skeletal system because it's embedded in my brain. I'm so proud of how far I've come and all the things I've not only learned, but retained in the last four and a half months.

Overall, I'm wiser and more confident in myself and my learning abilities because of beauty school.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
