The first month of college can be really scary. You come in with a lot of ideas of what it's going to be like, and more often than not, it turns out to be completely different than what you expected. In your first month, you probably have experienced a lot of highs and lows already. There are certain things you learn in your first month, and if you haven't yet, you definitely will soon.
1. The friends you make your first week probably won't be your friends for the rest of your college career.
Sure, you may exchange a friendly greeting when you pass each other on the way to class, but a majority of the friends you make in the first week usually don't end up being lifelong friends.
2. No matter how much you wish for it, your money is not endless.
Sure, you might have a part-time job, left over grant money, or your parent's credit card. But unfortunately, money doesn't grow on trees.Ordering out every night or wiping out your school's bookstore may seem good and fun for the first couple of weeks, but trust me, the money goes away fast.
3. There's no such thing as being "weird."
Trust me, there are a lot of weirdness at college. There's that guy who wears a unicorn onesie while riding a scooter down the hall, the girl playing a ukulele barefoot in the quad, and the person brooding in the dark corner of the stairwell. It's college, people are weird, and that's okay.
4. Being in adult is a lot of work.
Remember when we were kids, and we used to wish we were grown ups? Boy, we were wrong. Balancing school, work, personal life, paying the bills, random car emergencies. Sometimes it's not fun, but that's life. Fortunately, we learn to make the best of it.
5. Make time to take care of yourself.
As college students, we end to put our health (both physical and mental) on the back burner, but it's really important to remember to take care of ourselves. Try to eat balanced, exercise daily, an get a good nights sleep. It will make a world of difference.
Good luck with the rest of your year!
