5 Things I Don't Tell My Brother Often Enough

You were my first best friend, and you will always be whether you know it or not.

1. Thank you for being one of my biggest supporters and always keeping me humble.

From being one of my biggest fans while I am on the softball field, to watching all of my cross country races in down pouring rain. I can always see you clap and smile watching from the sidelines. The same goes for me. I am always in awe of your talents in school, in baseball, and in life overall. Thank you for always cheering for me when I succeed, and bringing me back to reality when I needed it the most.

2. I am sorry for acting like your mother at times.

I know I may nag and boss you around, but it’s because I want what’s best for you. I’m not your mother, but I’m the next best thing, your big sister. I will always believe that I have valuable advice, even if you don’t want to listen to it. So no, eating three donuts for breakfast is not healthy and I will continue to tell you every day if I have to. My inner proud mom always comes out whenever your report card comes in, and at all of your baseball games. I’m sorry, you’ll just have to deal with it.

3. I am a phone call away, even if we haven’t talked in weeks.

Being away at college and on my own doesn’t mean I have forgotten about you and the rest of the family. I still love it when I get a random text from you, or messages on Facebook. I’m always here if you need anything at all. Please don’t forget that.

4. You’ve made me a stronger person.

Whether you know it or not, it's really true. In fact, I do remember every single insult you’ve thrown at me. I know you didn’t mean them, but they’ve all helped me to step back and look at myself at times when I was being rude, selfish, and irrational. Our yelling matches we’re stupid, but they’ve helped me in ways I never would’ve imagined. I’ve always forgiven you quickly, and we happen to point out the worst in each other but it’s made me mature and grow. You’ve always been there too when I needed a shoulder to cry on, or needed you simply to tell me to suck it up. Tough love is the best love at times.

5. Thank you for all of the laughs, cries, hugs, and secrets.

Brother, thank you for everything. From the bear hugs, being an open ear when I need to vent and tell you my secrets, your smile when I crack a joke, shaking your head at my wise remarks, to us laughing for minutes on end when you try to burp loudly, it all means the world to me. I may not say it enough, or even will roll my eyes at you sometimes, but I sincerely appreciate your friendship, love and guidance. You’re one of the few people that can truly understand me and can catch on quickly to what I’m thinking or feeling.

Thank you for everything brother. I cannot be any more proud of the person that you are becoming. You’re becoming such an independent, intelligent, and caring young man. I cannot wait to see where the future takes you.

I’m so lucky to have the coolest brother ever. I love you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
