The recent events surrounding the Brock Turner case has triggered a loud of volume of condemnation for his actions. Yet, a number of young men struggle to integrate themselves into the conversation of sexual assault, perhaps feeling inadequate to tackle such sensitive issues. In writing this article, I hope not to trivialize recent events, but use a step-by-step guide for young men who want to end rape culture.
1. Listening to a Survivor’s Story
Rape is a traumatic experience. So when a human being has the courage to share their story, and in the process be vulnerable with the whole world, we need to stop and listen and lament together.
2. Build an actual friendship with a woman
No, I’m not advising you to catch up with your aunt or flirt with your crush, I’m telling you to really seek out a wise female peer who can help you recognize feminist-related issues and patiently call you out.
3. Become an Advocate
Join your local college feminist club, or share content online that is relatable to fighting rape culture. Some personal recommendations are FTND, which is a useful anti-porn database, and HeforShe, which specifically targets men to join the movement for gender equality.
4. Examine What You Consume
Pigging out late night on junk food never feels good in the morning. Likewise, watching entertainment which sexualizes women reinforces demeaning tendencies in social interactions. I’m not asking you to be a prude, but I’m telling you to be intentional with what you’re viewing at night.
5. Continue Being Open to Correction
This is the hardest part. At this point, it’s easy to feel prideful, and pass the blame when you make a mistake (i.e. “Well, at least I’m not like him!”). But the reality is that it’s wrong to justify questionable actions, when there is so little justice for victims of sexual assault.
Rape has for generations affected our sisters and those we hold dear. Together, we as men can strive to create environments fight rape culture, and advocate for victims of sexual assault.
