Thinking About Music

Halestorm

Halestorm is an American Rock band that includes lead vocalist and guitarist Lzzy Hale, drummer (and brother) Arejay Hale, guitarist Joe Hottinger, and Josh Smith on bass. Halestorm has been around a lot longer than most people realize, Lzzy and Arejay founded the band in 1997 when Lzzy was very young. Some of my favorite songs by them are “Familiar Taste of Poison”, “Love/Hate Heartbreak”, and their cover of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”.

Like A Storm

Like A Storm is an Auckland, New Zealand based Rock band. The band consists of brothers Matt, Kent, and Chris Brooks, also known affectionately as “the Brooks brothers.” Aside from being incredibly talented, LAS sets themselves apart from the crowd by their insane use of the “didgeridoo” which is an indigenous wind instrument from Australia. I’ve had the immense pleasure of meeting these guys, and they’re as friendly as they are talented. Some of my favorite songs by them include “Love The Way You Hate Me”, “Gangster’s Paradise”, and “Wish You Hell”.

Starset

Starset is an American based Rock group that was founded in Columbus, Ohio and formed by Dustin Bates in 2013. Members of Starset include Dustin Bates who is lead vocals, keyboard and guitar, Ron DeChant on bass, keyboard and backup vocals, Brock Richards on guitar and Adam Gilbert on drums. My sister got me listening to Starset and at first, I wasn’t a fan (sorry guys), but now they’re one of the few bands I listen to everyday. I think it’s awesome that Dustin Bates is an engineer, as the band embraces that in their live performances and the tidbits they end their songs with. Some of my favorite songs by them are “Dark On Me”, “My Demons”, and “Carnivore”.

Failure Anthem

Failure Anthem is an American based Rock group from Greensboro, North Carolina made up of Kile Odell, Ryan Nimmo, and Troy Surratt. This is another band I have had the privilege of meeting, and talking to, on more than one occasion. Not only are these guys talented, but they put on an amazing show, are super interactive with the audience, and maintain great energy no matter how long they play. Some of my favorites by them are “Paralyzed”, “Just a Wasteland”, and “Leap of Faith”.

And last, but not least…

Through Fire

Through Fire is an American based Rock group from Omaha, Nebraska and was founded by Justin McCain. The band includes Justin McCain on guitar and backup vocals, Grant Joshua Kendrick on lead vocals, Jesse Saint on bass and backup vocals, and Patrick Mussack on the drums. I met these guys in Greensboro, North Carolina not knowing who they were and was immediately blown away by the entertainment, charisma and raw talent of each and every member of this band. On top of their talent and stage presence, I found these guys to be super friendly and genuinely caring of their fans. Some of my favorites from them are “Stronger” and “Breathe”.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.
