Unless you have been living under a rock this past week, everyone knows about the season premiere of The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead is notorious for shocking premieres and finales and this past Sunday was no different. The events of the episode caused major outrage and only the best shows can get their fans that upset. While I am not going to spoil the events of the show, (even though the internet already did) I am going to talk about why everyone with access to cable should watch the show on Sunday night.
1. It's about more than just zombies.
The Walking Dead follows the story of Rick Grimes and his group of people as they try to survive in the zombie apocalypse. Unfortunately, many of the problems Rick and his group faces are about other groups. The show displays how humans will interact when the apocalypse happens. As Rick has shown through his progression during the series, people start to lose their morals and only focus on survival. Rick has shown many times that he will do anything to save and protect his people, even if it includes killing large amounts of people. The show also plays with the idea of justification for actions such as murder, theft, and cannibalism.
2. They aren't afraid to kill off major characters.
Like Game Of Thrones, The Walking Dead routinely kills off characters that have been on the show for many seasons. Killing off main characters makes the show seem more realistic and makes the audience weary of every decision Rick makes for his people. After all, the show is set during the zombie apocalypse; people are going to die.
3. The actors are phenomenal.
There is nothing worse than a show filled with terrible actors; The Walking Dead is not one of them. The show includes cast members from other countries, such as Andrew Lincoln who is from London, England. Lincoln is able to disguise his British accent for a believable southern American accent all while giving his best performance every episode. Other actors on the show prove time and time again how amazing their acting is and why the show has such a large fan base.
4. The characters are relatable.
Starting from the very beginning when Rick wakes up in the hospital, the show excellently displays Rick's fear of the walkers and killing them. Seeing Rick's sorrow and5 misunderstanding made us all feel an instant bond with the character. Other characters like Glenn have shown a wild side. At one point, Glenn drives a sports car and is a little too excited about it. Also, Carl, Rick's son, eats a whole bucket of pudding in one afternoon when he is going through puberty and we can all relate to that feeling.
5. The series is not just a survival show.
The Walking Dead is at various points a comedy, and at others it is a drama, or a romance. There are funny moments, sweet moments, and tragic moments. The show takes a realistic approach to humans dealing with the apocalypse in the ways they know how. The show isn't all action and gore, though it does contain a good amount of both. What makes the show different is how it became the best show on television.
