I’m lucky. I work summers and holidays at The Henry Ford, America’s greatest history attraction. It’s a neat place where dozens of buildings and millions of artifacts tell the story of American innovation. It’s not the Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum you might remember from field trips when you were a kid; it’s now much more. There’s Greenfield Village, Henry Ford Museum, the Giant Screen Experience and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour.
The Henry Ford is popular in the summer, but it’s still a great time to visit in the fall and winter. So, if you’re looking for something fun to do when there’s not a home football game, or you want somewhere to go on a weekend in the winter, take a road trip to The Henry Ford in Dearborn.
Here are five good reasons why The Henry Ford is such a cool place to visit this fall and winter:
1. Catch a ride on a real Model T
A steam-powered train or a 1919 carousel (with hand-carved animals to ride on) before Greenfield Village closes for the season in November. See some cool fall stuff like Firestone Farm cooking demonstrations, glass blowing and candlestick making.
2. Experience Hallowe’en in Greenfield Village.
No matter how young or old you are, put on your costume, tour the village at night and get candy along the way. Check out the ”Headless Horseman” and over 1,000 carved pumpkins. Guaranteed you’ll see cuties like Elsa, Anna and Superheroes everywhere.
3. Head inside to Henry Ford Museum.
Sit on the Rosa Parks Bus, see the Kennedy Presidential Limousine, the Lincoln Chair and a 1939 airplane. Or, catch lunch in an old-time diner car.
4. Watch “The Polar Express” on the Giant Screen Experience
And see if you can still “hear the bell.” Wear your pajamas and you’ll get a free popcorn. Don’t be embarrassed, lots of people put on their pjs for the movie (I know because I sweep up the popcorn!). The movie starts playing around Thanksgiving.
5. Be part of Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village.
The village becomes a winter wonderland with skating, caroling, hot chocolate and fireworks. People walk around carrying neat handmade lanterns, and Santa shouts out the names of good girls and boys. It’s an awesome event to do with friends during the holiday break.
The Henry Ford has a full calendar of upcoming events. Take a look at www.the henryford.org. You’ll see why I’m lucky to work there.
